That part I don't know. Honestly I didn't even try it on the HP because I was told you either format it for PC or format it for Mac. Someone else told me there is some cheap software I can buy to access everything in whatever format I need.

Just plug it in to the USB port on the HP and see what happens. I wouldn't be surprised if he had just dragged and dropped all your files on to the external HD in which case the PC will recognize them just fine.

Because the closest Apple store for me is an hour away, and they keep the computer. The issue was that I had a research paper on that laptop that I desperately needed. The only reason I went with someone local is because I couldn't be without a computer for weeks. Now that I have the laptop back, I will have to take it to Apple.

Use Google drive or Dropbox to manage files. I try and keep all of my school stuff mirrored on both drive and drop box.

Your all over the place here. Plug the damn drive into your computer. The files are probably there. You don't need to format an external drive, its plug and play.
