I agree that this administration's policies in the Middle East are flawed but not in the way you are suggesting. They are flawed in the same way every other US administration's policies have been flawed for the last 50 or 75 years. It involves propping up of bad governments, blanket backing of Israel while they brutally subjugate the Palestinians, and grossly indiscriminate use of force that disproportionately hurt civilians and drives them into the hands of the terrorists.

Every US adminstration has done this in spades and the Obama administration is no different. That's the sad reality of the bankrupt approach of the West in the Middle East.

Never said that, Rip. I don't know what everyone's opinion is, so I never assume anything. I think that in general, the American public has been led to believe that the drone war is very clean, very antiseptic where we can take out the bad guys and nobody else. But the reality is a LOT messier.

Again, we should put ourselves in the shoes of the average Joe (or average Abdul) in the streets of Raqqa or Kabul. If your only experience of Westerners is the silent death that rains from above, apparently indiscriminately, killing your children and innocent family, then to you, as far as you are concerned, all Westerners are evil killers. Then you have someone come to you and say hey, support us, we will fight the Westerners. I don't find it hard at all to see how supporting Al Qaeda or ISIS would be that hard for the average person in that situation. Our policies are what feeeds these organizations and the way to emasculate them is to remove that support at the street level, not by trying to bomb them out of existence.
