Black Kean University alumna, activist tweeted threats against black students during racism protest: officials

A barrage of terrifying tweets directed at black students of a New Jersey university were actually made by a black alumna participating in a protest about racism, prosecutors revealed Tuesday.

Self-proclaimed activist Kayla-Simone McKelvey, 24, sent messages from an anonymous Twitter account menacing black students of Kean University in Union, N.J., starting Nov. 17, according to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office.

“i will kill every black male and female at kean university,” read one of the tweets from the account @keanuagainstblk, which has been suspended.

“black people at kean university will die #keanuniversity” read another.

McKelvey received a summons for a single count of third-degree creating a false public alarm.

Prosecutors said McKelvey, who was participating in a protest about racism at universities, left midway through the rally and opened the account at a Kean library.

“McKelvey allegedly created an anonymous Twitter account and began posting racially charged threats of violence against black Kean students,” prosecutors said in a release.

After sending the tweets, McKelvey returned to the protest and spread the word about the threats she had just secretly made.

There was never any legitimate plan to harm students, prosecutors said.

McKelvey’s LinkedIn indicates she is a personal trainer who graduated Kean University this year with a physical education degree.

She did not respond to a request for comment and is due in court Dec. 14.

I support the police. They just need to do a better job about hiring assholes. They'd probably hire me as a cop and I have no doubt that I have the wrong personality to be put in bad situations with a weapon.

This data may be outdated but in 2001 I took a Law Enforcement class at the University I went to and I remember the professor saying, 1 out of 10 cops are corrupt.

I think it's the profession itself that brings in the bad eggs. I have friends that are cops and they are great guys, they are cops because they want to protect and serve. On the other side of the coin I know 2 cops that I went to school with that were social outcasts and I am pretty sure they became cops for the sense of power it brings them.

One of them, when he was still in college, brought handcuffs in a bar, waited until there was an alteration and tried to handcuff someone.
