We've had our closest look yet at the returning X-Files, thanks to a new video from Fox. It heralds the start of the new six-part series, which begins on January 24. There's more than 20 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with show creator Chris Carter, as well as Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, Mitch Pileggi, and new faces like Annet Mahendru (The Americans) and Joel McHale (Community).
It goes without saying that if you want to avoid spoilers at all cost, you probably ought not watch the video, and we're not going to give too much away here. Carter picks up the story 13 years after The X-Files' last appearance, taking a fresh look at the show's mythos in a world thoroughly reshaped by 9/11.
After all, many of Mulder's fears and predictions have come to pass. Secret government conspiracies to surveil the general public aren't exactly outlandish anymore. There is indeed a vast data center hiding in plain sight in the desert. Extrajudicial executions conducted by drones are official policy. And terraforming the planet could be said to be underway.
We may finally find out exactly what happened at Roswell in 1947, and it appears there's a modern-day monster hunt that suggests the show's lighthearted side is coming back as well. The previous seasons and movies appear to still be canonical, but some characters thought dead are returning, with hopefully plausible-sounding explanations.
With 27 days left until the new season starts, there's still time to reacquaint yourself with the show on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime—you will have to watch more than seven episodes a day though.
