Florida State Student Who Gruesomely Murdered Married Couple Spoke Out Against Using Anabolic Steroids

Austin Harrouff, a Florida State University student and Alpha Delta Phi fraternity member who spoke out against the use of anabolic steroids on YouTube last week, was arrested after he murdered a married couple in an extremely violent, bizarre and apparently random “face-biting” attack.

In a video uploaded to YouTube on August 11, 2016, Harrouff told viewer that steroids weren't really for him. He apparently loved bodybuilding and once wanted to follow in Arnold Schwarzenegger's footsteps before he decided he didn't want to resort to steroid use.

"I just want to let you know that I came to a realization of something," Harrouff said. "I no longer want to follow Arnold or any other bodybuilder. I want to follow myself, I want to actually believe in myself."

"I don't need drugs. I know that they can change me… [Steroids] are not really for me."

Harrouff should have followed Schwarzenegger's path. Instead, Harrouff murdered John Stevens III and Michelle Mishcon at their home in Tequesta, Florida. He also stabbed neighbor Jeff Fisher multiple times. Fisher intervened in an unsuccessful attempt to save the couple.

Fisher's 911 call alerted police to the unfolding tragedy.

“There’s a young man beating up a woman across the street,” Fisher told the 911 dispatcher. “It’s in the garage. I think he had a knife but I’m not positive.”

When the first deputy from the Marin County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) arrived on the scene, she observed Harrouff making incoherent and “animal-like noises” as he was crouched over Stevens' body while biting and causing substantial trauma to the victim's face. She deployed a taser gun on Harrouff and physically tried to move Harrouff off of the victim to no avail.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder reported that Harrouff was very muscular and displayed superhuman strength which made it challenging for officers to restrain him. Two additional sheriff's deputies and a K9 were required to subdue Harrouff.

Harrouff has been hospitalized under police guard at the St. Mary's Medical Center. He is reportedly under heavy sedation but expected to survive.

The news media loves to sensationalize any connection it can find between the commission of a violent crime and the use of anabolic steroids. Since Harrouff swore off steroids, it gives the media little ammunition to pursue its favorite “roid rage” angle in explaining the double murder.

“It’s inexplicable,” Snyder said. “One of the first things we try to do at a crime scene is try to understand the motive of the offender, because it is the motive of the offender that gets us going in the right direction. In this case, we can’t establish a motive. It’s ‘I don’t know.'”

It still hasn't stopped investigators and reporters from speculating about the “cause” of Harrouff's behavior. Steroids may be off the list but it may be an entirely unrelated and non-performance-enhancing drug that will be blamed. The MCSO has ruled out several substances of abuse – including methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin and other commonly used recreational drugs.

Snyder expects the culprit will be a hallucinogenic drug such as “flakka”.

“I’m not going to speculate, except to say that we know in our business that people on Flakka or bath salts will do this type of behavior, where they attack the victim and do the biting and actually remove pieces of flesh in the bites,” said Snyder.

Anything to take the blame off the person themselves. If it wasn't steroids then it must've been a supplement or other drug. Eyes rolling. Typical.

Possibly. I don't think Dahmer was on drugs or any of those serial killers that ate their victims. Just that last guy on bath salts that are the homeless guy's face a few years back. Who knows.
