  • Obama says current state of media needs to change.

Pittsburgh (AFP) - President Barack Obama on Thursday decried America's "wild, wild west" media environment for allowing conspiracy theorists a broad platform and destroying a common basis for debate.

Recalling past days when three television channels delivered fact-based news that most people trusted, Obama said democracy require citizens to be able to sift through lies and distortions.

"We are going to have to rebuild within this wild-wild-west-of-information flow some sort of curating function that people agree to," Obama said at an innovation conference in Pittsburgh.

"There has to be, I think, some sort of way in which we can sort through information that passes some basic truthiness tests and those that we have to discard, because they just don't have any basis in anything that's actually happening in the world," Obama added.

His remarks came amid an election campaign that has seen Republican candidate Donald Trump repeat ideas and take on key staff from right-wing media outlets.

They also come at the end of an eight-year presidency in which Obama has been plagued by false scandals over his place of birth that have forced him to play media-critic-in-chief.

For much of that time, Republicans and Democrats -- which their own media sources -- could rarely agree on even the most basic facts to build a debate.

"That is hard to do, but I think it's going to be necessary, it's going to be possible," he added.

"The answer is obviously not censorship, but it's creating places where people can say 'this is reliable' and I'm still able to argue safely about facts and what we should do about it."

Plagued by false scandals? One channel was on his ass. The other news channels wouldn't dare say anything negative about the guy. Pure comedy that he is saying anything about the state of the media.

Ok. But did it ever truly exist?

Guy is talking about censorship, but don't worry he said it wouldn't be censorship. Give me a break.

Yea I think it did. At least to a higher standard of today. Today it's all about sensationalising and getting the story reported first even if it's in error. I feel like there was a higher degree of fact checking in the past.

Turbo for the sake of a good discussion and because I'm interested.. let's try to forget about the fact that it's Obama here and focus on the main point.

Don't you think the media should be a bit more factual with less sensationalising and more actual in depth reporting.

I honestly feel that the current media trends and ways of doing business is very dangerous.

So how has the left done a complete 180 on freedom of speech anyway? In the '60s they were all about it, now they do everything they can to stop the speech of those they disagree with from some perceived morality basis. Just strange to me.

Obama is correct. We need more honesty in the media across the board. On both sides. And Turbo, just one channel? Really? I'm assuming you are talking about Fox News. What about Breitbart? theBlaze? Rush? Those are all media and they all made up plenty of lies about Obama. Remember 2008? Obama will side with Muslims if the winds change, Obama wasn't born in the US, Obama goes to a racist church, Obama pals around with terrorists, Obama is Hitler. I used to watch Glen Beck back then on Fox and it was a shitshow.

Granted the other media is bias in favor of the left but at least from what I've seen on the left which the bias is there, they don't typically outright make up lies and contribute to the insane fear mongering as you see on the right.

Obama is right, the media needs to change across the board. Not sure how anyone can't agree with that.

I think there is a difference between freedom of speech and just making up outright lies to fit your agenda. That's where the problem is, the truth isn't being told and it's blatant.

Take the comments from Obama and place the name Cruz, Trump, etc under them. The mainstream media would be going insane this very moment.

Moochie you like the truth? Seems like lies about Benghazi, Fast and Furious, the ACA, and Obama's past were told without many raising an eyebrow. But that is ok right? Lies or disinformation is ok as long as it benefits the people you like. Give me a. Real.

                          You are being dumb.

I don't care who said it. Stop being so Moochie.

I've agreed with the main point, but censorship is not the answer. Journalists aren't going to change. The game is first to print, not first to verify.

Do you or do you not agree with his point. Or is it impossible for you to acknowledge any point made by that black devil of yours?
