He was just lifting too heavy. Studies show that you can reach the same level of hypertrophy whether you lift light with many reps or few reps with heavy weight. The only thing I go heavy on anymore is deadlifts because its advised not to do a bunch of reps of deads because it throws off your form resulting in a potential back injury.
