Yeah, you read it right. Im shy. But let me explain.
Im good at making friends, and Im in my element in social situations, but Im having trouble "breaking into" a clique so to speak.
Its not even really a clique.
You see, at my Tahitian Drum & Dance studio, there is a group of about 10 guys.. age range of 16-20. They are all realy cool, and nice, but they have all known each other since they were kids.
Dont get me wrong, they are real nice, but I dont have much in common to talk to them with. Besides drum & dance, they are REALLY interested in computers.. like animation.. music compostition, customizing computers etc. Oh yeah, and video games. Those areas Im not really into.
I kinda look at going to the studio like when I go to the gym. I focus 100%, and Im there for business -business meaning being bigger and better each week I go.
Here's where the shy part comes in. Im not one to walk up to guys and strike up random conversation.. in places that are "serious" to me like the gym, school, or the studio. I dunno.. Im just shy in that way. Im not shy like that around girls tho.
Also, Im easily the biggest guy there. Size always seems to weigh too heavy in the intimidation factor. Leo, 18 years old and the son of the owners of the studio who is also the drum and dance instructor is the "leader" of all these guys. He's very nice and stuff, but I feel.. I dunno.. not animosity.. but like.. kinda how two dogs will circle each other.. sizing each other up? I feel that mentally.
I think that he subconsicously sees me as a threat to his Alpha Male status.
I try to come as humble as possible, I mean, Im the new guy.. right? I take criticism VERY well, and I push myself very hard, and I leave my cockiness at the door.. but.. I dunno.. how can I seem more approachable?
Since the boys are 16-20 years old, they are kinda shy around the girls, but when the classes mix.. Im very talkative and flirty with the girls.. and I think this puts a distance between me and the rest of the guys as well.
So what do you guys think? Haveyou ever been in a situation like this? Like.. mebbe you moved to a new school and was the new guy on the sports team.. when did you feel like you were part of the fraternity?
:)
Im good at making friends with straight guys one on one in a social level, but in big groups straight boys are hard to break thru
