I would submit that the numbers being put up are incorrect. Here is an analysis done by a UMass economist.

By the way, California will be the 5th or 6th biggest economy in the world. Only the US, Japan, China, Germany, and the UK on a good day are bigger. So, if Italy and France can do single payer, so can California. They have the numbers to do it. The only thing missing is the political will. Until now, perhaps.
