No beach trip for me then. We are watching it. But I'm not going if they are still trying to survive.

And all the cranes that are not secured or were brought down...over half a dozen cranes...remember when NYC and their last hit? That crane was dangling.

MORNING THOUGHTS. The first light of day shows Irmas has undergone some changes overnight. First off, sustained winds are down to 150 mph. Secondly, Irma is completing an eye wall replacement cycle and the eye continues to widen. The diameter of the eye now is about 45 miles, which is good.

Generally speaking, when the eye expands, the storm weakens, while the wind field increases. Think of a figure skater who is spinning. When she pulls her arms in, closer to her body, she spins much faster. When the skater extends her arms away from her body, the spin slows. Same thing with a hurricane, when the eye expands, the storm spins slower. So, weakening is good! The track of Irma is going to be very close, if not on the coast of Cuba. The storms interaction with land will more than likely weaken the storm further.

I will be looking for intensity changes very closely. The track forecast has not changed much, nearly all the models are forecasting a storm running up the middle of Florida and the official forecast from the Hurricane Center follows along. We have all seen the incredible photos of the damage in the Caribbean from Irma. Remember, that is CAT 5 damage. The storm is NOT going to be a CAT 5 when it is over central Florida. NOT a CAT 4, probably NOT a CAT 3, more than likely a CAT 2.. While that is certainly no picnic, and there will be damage, the trend towards a "weaker" hurricane is good. We will all get through this. Just do what you are doing. Finish up your preparations and do not stress. It has been a long week!

Grand Cayman was the clearest water of all the places I've been in the Caribbean. 7 mile beach is beautiful.

Cool! I thought I remember you talking about it before. I've been doing some reading and Turks is suppose to be a little better, GC has more shops and nightlife. But GC wasn't hit by a fan storm, so it is looking like the better option.

Montecito looks amazing. Obviously popular right now. All the good resorts are sold out. Thanks for the info though. It is on my trip list now.

Euro forecast models superior to US models. NOAA's best weather model seems to be getting worse with hurricanes, not better.

We have written a fair amount at Ars recently about the superiority of the European forecast model, suggesting to readers that they focus on the ensemble runs of this system to get a good handle on track forecasts for Hurricane Irma. Then we checked out some of the preliminary data on model performance during this major hurricane, and it was truly eye-opening.

Irma could hit Florida Keys as a Category 5, hurricane center says

Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center say the storm's wind speeds will increase after Irma passes Cuba then slips into the extremely warm waters near the Keys.

Irma is expected to have sustained winds of 160 mph and once again be a Category 5 hurricane by the time it makes US landfall on Sunday.

It's now a confirmed category 5 again and windspeed is increasing.
