My older son went to public school throughout except for 3 years in late elementary and middle school. My younger son has been in private school. Frankly, I'm not sure the difference is huge although my son's private school is excellent. My wife and I spend a huge amount of time with them outside school hours, engaging them intellectually, both on school subjects and on knowledge in general. That's what makes all the difference.

I agree. I think the parents are a huge problem. They expect the school to do all of the work. Teach and raise their kids.

Just curious, did your kids go to public or private school? I still have a few years left to decide, but we are weighing all pur options. The public schools in Ga aren't the best, some shining starts for sure, but not many. And I'm sorry if I sounded abrasive, just tired.

I'm saying we have a HUGE issue with that!!! EAXCTLY!!!..its the liberals(ACLU) and things like that who have taken all our foundations this country was built on and are removing them...because it offends some one..

Now if someone domnt believe in something fine..its your right to not believe...but because some one don't believe or like it don't make it right to remove our history from all others. This is how we repeat the same mistakes..from rewrighting ..or just forgetting history..right wrong or indifferent...its history

Wait. Teaching of intelligent design and that evolution didn't happen is a liberal plot? Not sure where you are going with this.

To add, I didn't bring up any liberal/conservative stuff. I'm just focusing on why the average American citizen's grasp of history, geography and science is absolutely abysmal, and how that has real world consequences, since he/she is also part of the electorate.

Funny most teachers are educated by their professors in collage...it's my understanding...those are mostly liberal.gee...imagine that...the dumbing down of america

Not arguing about the funding model, but the issue I have is with abysmal standards, the teaching of absolute nonsense in vast swaths of the country, especially in the South (Kansas being a notable exception for some strange reason) and the total absence of critical thinking skills among kids.

If I die tomorrow, I'll go secure in the knowledge that I have raised a couple of kids who are agnostic, are completely rational in their thoughts, and have decision making based on scientific evidence as the essential pillar of their thinking process.

Aren't curricula set by the local school boards or states? Not sure what the feds have to do with schools in Texas trying to teach intelligent design in schools, or Kansas removing references to evolution from their textbooks. You can't pin that crap on the feds.

Actually I can. Federal dollars are required for these schools to function. FEDERAL dollars, not state. They receive both, but the feds run the show because they have the pocketbook.

Decades of poor education and a *terrible* social net has resulted in a population that is beyond dumb. Really, the level of ignorance about basic history, geography and science is astounding in this country when I compare it to many other developed countries I've visited or spend extended time in.

There are real consequences to this that no quantity of Nobel Prizes can make up for. When we have 30% of the population believing that the earth is 4000 years old and that man-made global warming doesn't exist, these aren't merely the source material for comedy shows. These result in clowns like Trump getting elected, in congressmen and senators wtihout the basic scientific literacy to make good policy, and the unquestioning spending of billions and billions of dollars in weapons and military aid when our country is falling apart.

Terrible education that is mainly provided by the federal government. Education hit a stand still when the feds took over. No child left behind. Fill up the classrooms with illegal, I'm sorry, undocumented immigrants. Underpaid, underqualified, overly stressed teachers is part of the problem. Hopefully the government will step in and fix their mistakes, lol. Maybe they will just take over healthcare and make it as great as the education system.

The white baby boomer generation is unbelievable. My mom sends me a text this morning saying.. "what is a territory and why do we have to spend money and help Puerto Rico"? I explained to her why we need to help them as a US territory and her response was "I still don't like it".

So I gave her a scenario if I was living in PR and she couldn't reach me because the cell towers are down, the power is out etc.. she said she would come and find me. I said if she was somehow able to make it to PR, what if she made it to where my house had been located and it had been destroyed and I was nowhere to be seen... she finally understood and said "yea your right we should help them". lol. unbelievable.

i hate to say it but its people like my mom and her mindset that voted this president into office. there can be no doubt that he will go down as the dumbest president in US history by an absolute mile.
