Undocumented immigrant appointed to state post in California

The Senate Rules Committee on Wednesday appointed the first undocumented resident to a statewide post, according to Senate President pro Tem Kevin de León's office.

Lizbeth Mateo, a 33-year-old attorney and immigrant rights activist, will serve on the California Student Opportunity and Access Program Project Grant Advisory Committee. The committee advises the California Student Aid Commission on efforts to increase college access for California students from low-income or underserved communities.

"While Donald Trump fixates on walls, California will continue to concentrate on opportunities," de León said in a news release. "Ms. Mateo is a courageous, determined and intelligent young woman who at great personal risk has dedicated herself to fight for those seeking their rightful place in this country."

In a statement, Mateo said she welcomed the opportunity. “While undocumented students have become more visible in our state, they remain underrepresented in places where decisions that affect them are being made," she said.

Why is this disgusting? If anything, to me this is a success story. She's been here since she's 14, is contributing to our economy, and is highly educated. She is a DACA, she is allowed to work, legally..

It's a tough one. A country will fall apart with an open border policy. Saying "well the kids didn't commit a crime" just inspires every parent to bring thier kids here. So in terms of large scale policy I can't support California policy right now. I think sanctuary cities and shit like that are not the way to go. It is in a roundabout way an open border policy.

On a personal level this woman sounds like an upstanding and respectable person.

I welcome any person from any country as long as they've gone through the legal channels and they are here for good reasons.

Yeah and the other big factor here for me is that she was brought over here by her parents at the age of 14, out of her control. If Ripper's family moved here from some other country and dragged him with them it would be hard for me to blame Ripper and want to kick him out back to some place that's foreign to him, especially if he was doing everything right like this girl appears to be doing.

I'm OK with kicking out her parents though.
