The suspect opened fire inside the Tree of Life Synagogue during a baby-naming ceremony, Pennsylvania’s attorney general told the Associated Press. He was later detained and identified by law enforcement officials as Robert Bowers, 46, a man with a history of making anti-Semitic statements online.
Pittsburgh officials said at least six people were injured in the incident, four of them police officers. Law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation said early reports indicated multiple people dead inside the building.
“It’s a very horrific crime scene," Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich told reporters in the afternoon, after Bowers had been apprehended. “One of the worst that I’ve seen. And I’ve been on some plane crashes.”
