fyi i'm certainly not defending the ultra rich. i realize there is a shrinking middle class. i realize people can no longer afford to buy homes etc..

my only point is that this type of drastic action from the norm would send expected and unexpected shock waves through America that may take us to the brink.

And by the way scrum, she put Roosevelt right there with Lincoln and implied he was great. What are her thoughts on what he did to Japanese citizens and the internment camps? Oh you mean once again she knows not what she speaks? She seems to do a lot of that. Wonder if she realizes she has that in common with the trumpster.

Don't be daft. I am sure she is aware of Japanese internment camps. On aggregate, FDR was a good President, though he fucked up with the camps, no question.

Come on Bouncer, I expect more from you. I know you can parse the facts better.

By the way, those who are getting their panties in a twist about her tax suggestions would do well to understand what marginal tax rates are. That requires turning off Fox News and reading. What she says doesn't apply to anyone on this board unless one you have won the fucking Mega Millions jackpot this week.

By the way, Ocasio-Cortez graduated cum laude from Boston U in international relations. BU is the #5 ranked college for international relations in the country. Don't make it sound like she's some uneducated girl from the projects in the Bronx. The casual dismissal of her qualifications on here is laughable. I wonder what would cause it? I wonder.

scrum it does apply to everyone including the hickbillers if it hits wall street. wall street and main street are more intertwined then ever. wall street crashes main street gets raped.

i really think you underestimate how hard the rich would hit back over something like this. you think someone like Jamie Dimon would just eat shit and take it? the court battles alone and the resources someone like Dimon can bring to bear would paralyze the system.

it would be a financial nightmare. after all that they'd still find loopholes and safe havens etc..

this would be a blunder on par with prohibition in terms of unintended and unforeseen consequences.

If anyone is interested in reading, here is a paper by economists from MIT and Berkeley making the case for a 73% top marginal tax rate in the US.

What are you talking about? She has said that she was born in the Bronx, she is from a family of modest means (mother was a house cleaner if I remember right) and after college, she lived on less then $30K as a bartender while doing grassroots activism in the Bronx. All of which is true. But that does not take away her education or obvious smarts.

                          I don't doubt her education.

Merkel is also highly educated. Very smart woman. But she had some dumb ideas and couldn't foresee the consequences of her actions. She knew she was right until she realized she was wrong...

Article by Paul Krugman in today's NYT about top tax rates. This guy knows a thing or two about economics - he only got the Nobel Prize.

TL;DR: Hiking top tax rates won't hurt the economy. AOC is spot on.

please read all of what I have to say below scrum. i'm being genuine and I'm not arguing just for the sake of it. it's truly something I feel strongly about and I'm always willing to see a different perspective. i always value what you have to say even if I don't always see things the way you do.

                              ----

I read the article. I have to consider the data and the source without bias. my conclusion is that he probably knows what he's talking about. :D

i still believe though that with something as big as the economy there are always unforeseen consequences and the domino effect can get out of hand quick. think greenspan before the financial crises. he was the be all end all economist before the financial crises and a punchline afterwards. i think we may be surprised at how hard the super rich can bite. just because you think they don't need that 11th million doesn't mean they won't fight for every penny. i think just the news of that kind of tax proposal would hit the stock market very hard. the market would price in the fact that it may have less liquidity from the super rich going forward. a down stock market then leads to a down economy and the possible domino effect begins..

i don't like the way the article is presented for 1 major reason. give me a sec to explain..

take someone like me for example who stands in the middle and sees big problems on both sides. i think the right is idiotic when it comes to general science and things like the climate. i think the left is going bat shit insane with things like "sanctuary cities". i think trump is unfit to be president but I also think Palosi and Schumer are absolute snakes who will say whatever they need to according to the political climate. so i think it's pretty fair to say I truly stand in the middle.

so when someone like me reads that NYT article and the first thing I see is an attack on the right. my mind immediately goes into skeptical mode. the first thing i see is another political battle in the media. i would have absorbed and learned from that article much better if he had just presented economic data and his read on economic history.

it seems both sides see things in absolute black and white these days. that's not how things truly are. i have little doubt that if I talked to the author of that article and told him I'm white and i think we need better border security he would immediately cast me into a racist right wing role. then i would tell him that I agree with the dems on a a whole bunch of issues, i think trump is an idiot and my girl is from south America. his mind would fucken explode because he is so used to black and white generalizations. that's the biggest issue we face today IMO.
