Break down tasks into individual steps, especially for young children like a 5 y.o. Telling an ADHD child to clean their room is overwhelming to them. Instead you can tell them it's time to clean their room but you will have to break it down into smaller steps like...first pick up all of the books and put them away and show me when you're done. Then pick up stuffed animals and put them away. Pick up the clothes and put them away. Give the child maybe a 5 minute break as they accomplish each task and check on their progress while they're doing it...most of the time they'll get sidetracked but having you peek in and getting them back on task will help. This works for homework as well...one subject at a time, one page at a time, with breaks inbetween.

Stallion, with hard work from the parents, the kids will learn to do well. As the child grows they will be able to do more on their own and the repetition that us parents have to give becomes second nature so that it's not quite so annoying. LOL

I had ADD bad when I was a kid but back then (1970's) they didn't diagnose it, they just labeled kids lazy, etc. My report cards were mostly A's and B's but the teachers always made comments saying that I could do much better if I would only apply myself. After years of trying my best I gave up trying to please them, growing to hate school. Somehow I managed to graduate HS with decent grades but I could have done so much better if I knew about ADD and got treated for it. I'm just thankful that kids these days have medications and informed parents. Many kids with ADD/ADHD have above average intelligence and with the right guidance they will go far!
