  • Should I take a new job?

I guess I know that I want to go for it, just want to see what advice you guys may have.

It's at the same company I'm working for now. Currently I'm in the accounting department, but still low man on the totum pole. I graduated last May with a BS in Acct. I sat down with my boss a few months later about a promotion, and he wanted me to write down my job duties, what I'd like to get rid of, and what job responsibilities that other's in my dept have that I might like to take on. Things got hectic, blah blah, and I haven't done that yet. But I know that I do definately have an opportunity for promotion in my current department. With the promotion, I would still work for this same boss, he's the CFO. I love working for him, I know him on a personal level as well (he's my softball coach, plus he's helped me through family problems etc, he came to my graduation, etc etc). If I took the promotion, however, I'd report directly (and work in more close contact) with this other woman who is the Director of Finance, who is horrible to work for! I've done some projects with her, and while she can be ok sometimes, she's horrible on others. I've heard her disrespect and talk down to people under her. That's probably one reason I'm hesitating on the promo now. But I could really use the money.

So there is a new job posted in another department. It's 2 salary grades higher than mine. A grade is a wide range though, and they overlap...the salary grade actually starts 5k under what I make now, but goes another 11k higher than what I make now. So there's more potential for higher salary. Plus, they can't start me less than what I make now. The job seems okay, I want to talk to the supervisor that it's directly for. It's still statistical related, but not accounting. Which is another thing. I'm not really sure how much I actually LIKE accounting, but I do like working with numbers. I think this would be more of that. And the guy I'd work for is probably one of the nicest guys I've ever met (and I think he has the same personality to people who work for him).

I don't know why I'm hesitating except that I think my boss now would be pissed. I'm actually thinking of sitting down with him and explaining that I'm not even sure I'd like the promo I'd take here...I don't want to work for that lady (he knows others feel the same)...and that I think it would be a good opportunity. I think he will understand, and wants what's best for me...like he even wrote in my graduation card that whatever I choose to do after graduation, he wants what is going to advance my career, etc.

Sorry this got so long :) Go for it??

I think that explaining the situation honestly with your current boss it the best way to go. He seems to be on your side no matter what, so I'm sure he'll understand.

no on will fault you for trying to make more money and improve your station in life.... especially a family friend..

Just be honest with him, talk it over with him and dont sneak around behind his back. You want to do it all on the up and up so your relationship with your current boss is not strained incase the new job doesn not go through.

it sounds like the second job would more fit into a future career path out of accounting if that's where you don't think you want to stay.

imho, take the job that will give you more opportunities to learn more facets of the business environment. that will more adequately prepare you to make future decisions on your career.

either way, good luck with your decision :)

Find out a little more about the new job to see if it's what you expect. Personality wise you already know you'd be happier there, but you don't want to be stuck doing something you won't enjoy. If you think that you'll like the 2nd one better, talk to your boss and explain the situation so that it's done with respect and ask for his oppinion as well. Since he's got more experience there he may know something about the positions and what they can lead to in the future that you don't. Good luck!
