  • The Bay Area To Be Without Power For Days

what a nightmare. from the exploding homeless population to the power cuts the bay area is quickly becoming unrecognizable from just a few years ago..

*Most of San Francisco Bay area affected in pre-emptive move

*Utility PG&E, driven bankrupt by wildfires, won’t risk another

It was a once-unthinkable move: purposely shutting off power to millions of people and plunging a major metropolitan area into darkness.

And yet, come Wednesday, utility PG&E Corp. plans to shut electricity to 800,000 California homes and businesses -- representing roughly 2.4 million people -- to prevent wildfires as high winds are forecast to whip through the state. The outages will hit 34 counties, including much of the San Francisco Bay area, triggering a scramble by residents to prepare for what may be days without power.

For PG&E, forced into bankruptcy by devastating fires that its equipment has ignited over the past two years, there is no alternative. The shutoff is a key strategy for preventing its power lines from sparking another deadly -- and costly -- conflagration. It’s largely unprecedented. Never before have California utilities intentionally put so many people out of power for their own safety. Nor have they darkened heavily populated cities in addition to rural areas.

Biggest PG&E Shutoff Yet May Black Out 2.5 Million Californians

PG&E Corp. is preparing to cut power to an estimated 2.5 million Californians in what would be the state’s largest -- and potentially longest -- deliberate blackout ever.

The bankrupt utility giant is warning the lights may go off in about 850,000 homes and businesses across Northern California -- including parts of Oakland, Berkeley and other San Francisco Bay Area cities -- as it tries to keep power lines from igniting wildfires during a wind storm. The shutoff would hit almost one-tenth of California’s population and spread to nearly 20% of the utility’s total customers, spanning 36 counties.

PG&E, which has temporarily shut the power off for millions of Californians ahead of weather forecasts ripe for wildfires, refused to give rebates to customers affected by the lack of electricity, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Why it matters: Gov. GavinNewsom said Friday that California would hold PG&E accountable for failing to do its job in the wake of fires burning through the state. But PG&E is ultimately calling the shots, per the Times. California lawmakers are out of session until January. Without a special legislative session, the issue won't be addressed until then.
            • "Millions of Californians can do little more than watch as the lights go off, then on and maybe back off again during the blustery autumn of 2019," the Times reports.
            • PG&E CEO Bill Johnson said in response to Newsom's statement that it's too soon to know the cause of the Kincade fire — currently the largest in California — or where it started.
            • An investigation is ongoing, per CNN.

Background: Johnson said it could be a decade before the company has made enough improvements to its electric infrastructure to prevent pre-emptive blackouts, which aim to prevent wildfires during high-wind periods and dry spells.
            • PG&E was deemed responsible for causing California's deadliest fire, which took 85 lives and burned thousands of homes and businesses in 2018.

Generac stock has jumped $13 a share since the mass power outages started. Analysts are anticipating a lot of Californians buying whole home generators, as this could be problem on the regular with the shitty power grid and nonexistent tree management in sensitive areas in the state.
