Where does body fat go when it's lost? Into the air, actually.

You Can't 'Turn Fat Into Muscle' - The Atlantic

Epic fail by the author of the article. His own knowledge of chemistry is breathtaking. In a nuclear reaction, mass is converted into energy. In the case of fat metabolism, or gasoline burning in an internal combustion engine, or firewood n a fireplace, it is the chemical bonds that are broken, releasing the energy stored in them. By confusing the two, the author was trying to be funny but comes across as an ignoramus. The correct answer is of course, that fat is converted into other chemical compounds that have less bond energy, like CO2, H2O, etc. as well as energy. No single answer.
