Family tradition. I am of the Hindu faith, and a subset of Hindus are vegetarian.

The definition of vegetarian I am using is where milk and milk products (butter, etc.) is ok but eggs/meat/fish are not. That is what I follow - the logic is that I don't eat anything that involves the taking of an animal's life.

Now, to be absolutely pedantic about it, whey protein can be made from cheese that uses rennet for curdling and rennet is obtained from the stomach lining of calves, but while some members of my family do not eat cheese for this reason, I have made an allowance for whey so that I can at least lift and gain some weight!

Whoa... this is veering dangerously off topic and I certainly don't want to spark off any veggie flame wars.

that's cool. i was just curious really...i see so many people claiming to be vegetarian for reasons that resemble animal cruelty (which i totally admire). but then i look down and can't help but notice the leather shoes on their feet.

      ...but i digress.
