  • Protein shakes...

    Please can someone recommend me a good functioning protein shake that won't make me puke. Thanks :D

    Also, can someone explain to me what is better if I am worried I may not be getting enough protein to help me bulk up, a protein shake or a shake with carbs and protein combined.... I hear that the combined shake is better as a meal replacement, if you haven't time to eat, but I reckon the protein shake would be better for me????

    that's kind of hit or miss. which ones don't you like? is it the flavor? the only shakes i like are the strawberry ones. vanilla and chocolate shakes have too strong of a taste for me. i like optimum nutrition. it all depends on if you're getting enough carbs from whole foods already. you really can't have too much protein (within reason of course), but too many carbs will work against you. if you add milk to a protien shake it'll add carbs.

        Well, the thing is this. I have tried carb +protein shakes before in vanilla flavour and this was quite good, but these shakes are mostly carbs, and i am right in thinking to bulk up I would really need more protein and less carbs, right? I don't wanna have so much carbs that I become a fat bastard!

        The only protein shake i have tried is the whey protein shake made by holland and barrett, I took one taste of it and chucked the whole lot out, not impressed at all......

          Muscle Milk tastes really good... i always use their strawberry as a base and add to that.

            :agree: Muscle Milk is some good shit!!! Strawberry and the Banana!!! I just got my 100% pure whey from All The Whey yesterday!!! It has no flavor but definately needs to be added to something like juice to drink it....alone by itself in water is not that great tasting!!!

              Ok, I will try muscle milk, but I don't know where to get it in the UK, I tried searching the net to no avail. I also tried to see how much it would cost getting it from the US, and the shipping is the same price as the product :(

              Please help me if you know where to get this stuff in the Uk so i don't have to fork out an arm and a leg for shipping costs.....

                  Shibby's right, watch the fat, and also the sugar contents of mm and weight gainers in general. if you can't find it or isn't cost effective just drink a protein shake with milk not water. and just get your carbs through whole foods.

                    Do you think it would be worth working in an extra cardio session or two if i go on this kind of shake? Or shall I stick to my 1 hour session a week and deal with the "trimming down" later on. I am not the kind that puts on any fat or weight very easily so i don't foresee myself becoming a fat bastard on this stuff.....

                      I wouldn't worry about it too much then. But uping the cardio wont's really help on fat loss either. I don't belive cardio to be an efficiant for fat loss. Sure it helps but nothing like resistance training.

                        really? not even longer sessions at moderate pace as opposed to high intensity for shorter bursts?

                          Well it takes alot for your body to break down and use stored up fat. With cardio your just getting your heart rate up and burning calories at a high rate for the duration, but not enough for significant fat loss. You can keep that higer metabolism for around 2 hours after your finised. With weights since it's re-building process it can be up to 36 hours. See the difference? I'm not saying cardio is useless, just not efficiant enough to focus on as a source of fat loss. Having a good cardio system helps to keep fresh nutrients to your muscles and the rest of your body to rebuild. So it does go hand in hand.

                            On a side note, how many times do you see people at the gym spend so much time on cardio and still feel like there not getting enough (but arn't doing or don't know about resistance training) . That's why alot that join soon quite afterwards. Sure when they get on that treadmill they drop some weight initially. But alot of it is retained water.

                              I always thought as long as you were carb-depleted (like after an overnight fast) you would burn fat with a cardio session.... hence why everyone runs first thing in the morning....

                              Can you explain to me a little more about resistance training? Does this just mean weights :D
