Yep, 90% chance thats your problem. No way could I train on an empty stomach (no way would I want to). Cortisol levels go through the roof, etc. Have something, anything before you train. 12oz of orange juice with a scoop of vanilla whey is quick, simple and actually tastes pretty good and its a fairly decent pre workout "meal".

i don't understand WHY it's bad - especially if it's "okay" to do cardio on an empty stomach, why not train?

I can feel a big difference when I don't eat or if I eat too early before I lift. I try to eat about 1.5 hours before and I feel great, when I don't eat I run out of gas about halfway through my workout. I've tried cardio in the morning on an empty stomach and it didn't seem to effect me at all though.

Exactly. I've been this way for years, traing on a empty stomach. Then out of nowhere this happens. It bugs the hell out of me. It's also funny because I'm basically the only one in the gym with a sweater on. I'm hot and sweating and extremely cold at the same time. Even my bottem lip starts to turn white. And then I throw up( of course I got to the bathroom).

Cardio vs. weight training taxes different energy systems in the body. Depeding on your type of cardio, hopefully you do not use the aerobic system for weight training. Two main reasons why I personally wouldnt recommend or personally weight train on an empty stomach are:Originally posted by sana

1. Lack of energy. If I dont eat, Im useless as is the case with most since food = energy. After your body is in a fasting state all night, its essential to refuel before punishing your body again. Im sure we could all make gains if we didnt eat before training, but where would we be if we did eat, and eat properly before weight training.
2. Cortisol. The bodys stress hormone and its catabolic. Vitamins, etc. found in food fight or block cortisol, ie. vitamin C. Insulin is an antagonist to cortisol, thus a carbohydrate mix can also combat cortisol.
There are a few more minor reasons why one should eat before weight training, but these 2 are the predominant reasons.

i was drinking a no carb shake before the gym for about a month and a half and that didn't give me any more or less energy though.Originally posted by YellowJacket

i don't feel stressed, my body doesn't feel overtaxed - i actually wake up after the gym...
i train then do about 45 minutes of cardio after.
this is an extreme right now b/c i'm in contest prep.... but after my show, at the MOST i'll probably just drink a shake before the gym ...
