  • Looking for some help on a pre-game (basketball) meal...

My girlfriend plays basketball in college and is getting tired after about 4 possesions at a time. I've been working with her on cardio but something seems to be falling short. I have given her gatorade at different intervals, caffiene pills, and had her eat more complex carbs. So far is seems the caffiene pills have worked the best. I gave her 250mg an hour before the game and 250mg more just as the game starts. But something is still missing and I think it's the pregame meal. I might not be getting her to eat the right ratios. I have also thought about giving her a shake right as half time starts. but half time is only 12 mins. Oh and they play two 20 min halves.

BBall games are a bit more lengthy and requires more glucose than most other sports. If you have Adobe PDF viewer, I recommend you read this: http://www.yale.edu/uhs/departments/...guidelines.pdf

This is what our university (and we proposed it to other universities and they use it now) as a guideline for pre-event nutrition. I have a plethora of information on pre-event nutrition and effects on performance if youre interested (just completed a full length study/evaluation being reviewed now by a review board before being published) that I can share.

This is Yale's guidelines and we found it to be pretty good. Watch the high GI carbs before the game/event, one thinks of high energy, but you must remember, theres a quick burn out.

She had a game yesterday and she definately did better. My next question is, on the chart is says the intake of grams to bodyweight for post event. What would you suggest for pre-event?

I usually suggest 1/3 your body weight in complex carbs, to use a simple equation, if youre 225lbs, consume 75g complex (maybe not ALL complex but most) carbs 45-60 minutes pre event and a lot of water 10-15 minutes pre event.
