  • Post-Workout: Shake or Steak??

I have been wondering if a steak after a workout is better for you than a shake or do you need something that can be quickly digested immediately following a workout. See my dad owns a restaurant and recently i have been eating a steak after my workout and drinking a gatorade and i seem to be adding more mass than when i was having a shake directly after my w/o. Just curious as to some thoughts on this. Thanks

I would definitely recommend a shake with fast absorbing nutrients like whey protein, dextrose and malto. After you deplete your muscles of all glycogen and break them down, it is crucially important to refeed and refuel them asap. A steak is actually a poor way to do that because besides being a slower absorbing protein, it also has fat that slows down the entire digestive system. I've never done, at least not on a regular basis, a solid foods meal after working out but I know it goes against common theory.

What kind of shake were you taking PWO before? Does it compare calorically to what you are doing now? Most steaks are pretty large-you may just be having a huge amount of calories PWO. More calories=more mass (as a gross generalization)

I was having an ON whey shake, but it seemed like after i had that it would fill me up to the point that i couldnt eat a good meal for a few hours, so by eating the steak after my WO i was getting a good solid meal in quicker. I know it goes against common theory and that was the purpose of this post because i have gained solid size by doing this.

Well, perhaps some of the problem was that you weren't having any carbs with the shake. The carbs are at least as important as the protein in getting the muscles back into an anabolic state.
I don't know exactly why a whey protein shake would full you for a few hours. I usually have a whey/malto/dextrose shake immediately PWO and have to eat again in about 90minutes. I assume you weren't drinking that much fluids with the shake or immediately after working out. If you were really thirsty after working out because you didn't drink enough prior to and during working out and drank a ton PWO, that could leave you feeling full.
Either way, you're right that it's not good to wait several hours to get a solid meal, but I think with the appropriate PWO shake and maybe even forcing yourself to eat again in about 2hours you'll see better gains than eating a steak, although steak is hard to turn down--especially free steak!

i say drink your shake, then if you can eat your steak and gatoraid. the more protein the better, especially after your workout, because your heart rate is up nutrient absorbtion is at a much higher rate

Wrong, your body can only absorb so much protein and if he has the right post workout shake, he should not need the extra carbs from the gatoraide--and besides the carbs in the gatoraide are much less than optimal for refueling muscles.

im sure everone is different but i think the normal was 50mgs of protein per 2 hours is this correct or close? also to anwser the question go with the whey shake instead of the steak.

50gms every 2 hours is probably close to the max for most people--like you said everyone is different, but for most bodybuilder type people, I would think that is very close.

On the Gatorade part I would have to differ w/ you bro. B4 I got sick and I was massing it up I was using gatorade powder for my carbs pre and pwo shakes. I was gaining pretty good on this combo. It has dextrose in it. Also I know some BB that use pure sugar for their carbs pwo. Also Gatorade has essential electrolites that your body needs after a good workout. But I will agree that your pwo shake is better. If I could get my hands on some quality malto and dextrose I would, but I cant find any. You got a website?

Carbo Gain is a great malto product.

I didn't know gatorade used dextrose-that's good to know. I use the NOW products malto and dextrose for my shakes.
