  • Atkins and Sports

I've gained alot of weight in the past year and about 3 weeks ago I started the Atkins thing. I've lost almost 20 pounds and I'm trimmer than I've been in a long time. My brother wants me to start playing rugby with him on a men's club and I was wondering if I would need to change my diet drastically or just do a carbup 1 day a week. I went to the gym the other day (haven't been since I quit playing rugby)I am alot weaker than I used to be and I read that Atkins is catabolic. I really like the results I've had from the diet but I've never played sports or lifted weights while on it. any suggestions?

Rugby clubs typically practise on Tuesdays and Thursdays with matches on Saturday. If you are on a club like I was, practices are fairly intense. I've never been on Atkins or anything like that but I honestly don't think you're going to have enough energy to do all of this with 1 "carbup" day.

When i'm in season for rugby my caloric needs go waaay up, and i don't know about you, but cutting carbs out leaves me too tired to concentrate properly, let alone run and hit.

the diet section here is full of suggestions which i've found work pretty well for rugby, with some adjustments for the increased caloric needs.

of course, if you are a back and will just be watching forwards play rugby, you probably don't need to change anything...heh.

Now, them's fighting words.... forwards usually just grunt and push each other around in scrums and spend the rest of the match huffing and puffing with their hands on their hips - we backs on the other hand...... :D

Just get to the rucks and get us the ball, will ya? :D :D

Thanks for the input. I always played a lock(6'6" 250lbs currently) but I'm really looking to bring my speed and fitness up so I can be a loose forward. I do miss pizza and hoagies so I guess when the season starts I can add according to my cravings. I have a feeling I'm destined to be in the tight five for life though.

            heh...fighting words alright.

before my knee injury and susequent weight gain i was a centre/flank...now thanks to this site i'm destined to prop/hook i think. damn it...that's what an extra 20lbs will do i guess.

make sure to eat to protect your muscle mass during the season...and at 6'6" i guessing you will never move from 2nd row, unless you get to a really high level where everyone is huge.
