  • Adding dextrose and carbs to protein shakes?

Just wondering what’s the purpose of adding 60-80g of dextrose to your post workout protein shake??? I’ve been reading this a lot but I have not clue why it is done, does it have any benefits, it’s gotta have something to do with the insulin spike no?
can someone please explain this to me I appreciate it.
Also what kind of a carbs can I mix in with my protein for post workout shake?

    Thanks

Add several spoonfuls of peanut butter and make your pwo shakes with whole milk - you'll be good to go - no need to research any further...

Really?? I always thought the fat in the pb slows down the digestion of the protein. Good for night time but not in a pwo shake.

For pwo I always use isolate whey protein, maltodextrin, and dextrose.

Don't feel bad brother - I shouldn't have posted such bad advice without clarifying first - just having a bad day and some folks were just making it worse - shame on me...

And you're right - PB is NOT good pwo....

I am not so sure about this. The dextrose thing is relatively new. Many guys from the 70's and today still have fat post workout. I know 2 pros that have ground beef and rice immediately after the workout. My buddy and training partner from a few years back IFBB pro (now retired) Mike Morris use to have 1 cup of oatmeal, 1 banana, 2 TBSP Peanut Butter, 2 scoops Whey Isolates, and 5 g Creatine for a post workout shake. I am doing this now. People are to fast to jump onto the current trend and a so called "study". Fuck, there were many studies in the 50-70's done that said that steroids were useless for building muscle...

Our man here is cutting and he is not on drugs and he is not 250 pounds at 7% or 8% bodyfat - I do shit I don't recommend to others as well but that's because I'm "different" than them - everything taken into consideration here I still don't believe "newbie" should be taking in much more than a "clean" pwo shake/meal...

Dextrose is a good way to replenish muscle glycogen unlike frustose that only replenishes liver glycogen. After a workout, your muscles need to replenish the glycogen, if it does not, then it will break down the amino acids in the protein and turn it into carbs. If you use dextrose as your form of carbohydrate, the protein won't need to be broken down and instead can be used towards rebuilding the muscles.

ya ya, i know all the science behind it. sometimes though ignorance truly can be bliss. the guys of the 70's, 80's, and early 90's didnt know what we know now and most looked better. take a look at some of the pics from the recent NY Pro show, these guys look like shit. no legs, big ass bellys. bodybuilding is going downhill fast and it is partly to blame on our "knowledge" that we now have. having a huge insulin response like what you get from 50-80 grams of dextrose also has many negative effects. the human body is not exactly designed for such insulin responses, hence the alarming rate of diabetes in the world.

One of the reasons I don't do that anymore. I just use oatmeal now instead.

i also think that people need to start listening to there bodies. for example, i did the dextrose thing for awhile. about 20 minutes after my dex, protein, creatine shake, i would feel like a bloated mess for hours and hours. i took notice and said to myself, "my body is trying to tell me it dosent like this."

recently i was using Vitargo. a carbohydrate form that replaces muscle glycogen faster then dextrose. well, about 20 minutes after i would drink it, i would get dizzy and light headed. i said to myself, "my body dosent like this shit either". LOL.

people tend to believe and read every study even if they look worse and worse while following the "knowledge".
