I don't want to compete again for at least another 2-3 years. I would like to add on 15-20 more pounds then the weight I just competed at. During the off-season what has worked best? I have always bulked (clean) to where my bf% was about 13-14%. You can see the upper abs but no lowers. I really wouldn't want to get my bf% any higher then that. Currently I'm around 8%. Abs are very visible. Can you really make big gains by keeping your bf% under 10%? I'm a very hard gainer and have to eat a lot more then most to add weight. I have no problem eating believe me. I can pack the food in if needed. What approach do you guys take?

I have experimented a few times. If I bulk to much I feel sluggish and my gains suffer. My best gains are when I stay around 8-9% which is what I am at now.Originally posted by Chadd77I don't want to compete again for at least another 2-3 years. I've found that the closer to 10% I can stay the better off I am - I am around the 8% mark right now with tight abs and I feel great - workouts haven't suffered and weight is hanging around 225 - gonna try to stay this lean but get to about 235-240 by Christmas...
My old approach was to just add "weight" and was shooting for 250 but around 11% or 12% but I really think staying leaner last year helped me quite a bit and I'm making decent progress where I'm at now so I've decided to stick with the newer plan....

agreed. i think the whole "bulking phase" of the 80's and 90's have pretty much been proven worthless. holding 20lbs of fat does not help the body gain muscle any faster.Originally posted by fog_hat1981I've found that the closer to 10% I can stay the better off I am - I am around the 8% mark right now with tight abs and I feel great - workouts haven't suffered and weight is hanging around 225 - gonna try to stay this lean but get to about 235-240 by Christmas...

I have always tried to pack as much weight on as possible in the off-season. I never had problems cutting but I'm looking at it differently now. I'm around 8% and love the way I look and feel. Just never tried to add the weight with my bf% under 10%. I'm going to try this approach and see how it works out.
