  • Diet Asessment

Hey Guys, I'm still fairly new to the forums, and posted briefly a few weeks back. I'm an 18 year old guy, almost at 19. I've been training for about 5 years, on and off, and have had great increases in muscular endurance and cardiovascular endurance ( while running track). I have good genetics, all the males from my fathers side of the family were/are above average weight lifters and athletes. My goal since high school has been to put on about 12-15 pounds of lean tissue, and I've followed a good regimen to achieve that goal in the gym during my numerous attempts, though always my most plaguing issue was my eating habits and lack of caloric intake. I would push my body very hard, and in hindsight often too hard for the beginning of a training cycle. My body never seemed to heal right and I never gained weight, and after a while became discouraged. Recently I've re-vamped my approach, dedicating myself to the goal at hand, and now I'm much more financially capable of providing myself with the amount of food I need to gain this extra weight. I figured I'd post what I'm eating to see what you guys think and get any suggestions, the two things I'd like to mention are that I'm 18 and have a very fast metabolism, and have never had any real extra body fat to speak of, and two, I hate cooking and getting too complicated, so I eat alot of the same things every day, I'm sure I'll tweak them around and gt creative eventually, but to facilitate the sudden change I wanted to start with foods that would be simple, quick, and have the nutrition needed. for the past couple of days, when I first wake up I'll eat a thing of yogurt( because of its ability to help in digestion, I think its best to start off with in the morning) soon afterwards I head to the gym and get through my workout. right afterwards I start off on the kashi golean, this stuff is great considering its packed with protein and fiber, and I'll have a good three servings worth of it. I've been eating one box per day, spread out throughout the day, eating some whenever I feel hungry. this amounts to 1120 calories and 104 grams of protein in itself, along with a ton of fiber. I also eat a 5 pack of zone perfect bars per day, again I spread this out from mid morning to night, amounting to 1050 calories and 70 grams of protein. I'll cook one meal per day, usually consisting of some form of pasta and either canned chicken or turkey mixed in with it, amounting to about 500 calories and 26 grams of protein. I again have yogurt before I sleep at night and like to mix in a small shake of some kind, either muscle milk or myoplex. when alls said and done, The intake is around 3000-3200 calories, and 250 grams of protein. I know the schedule seems a little rough, but I have somewhat of a grazing mentality, snacking on the cereal constantly and eating the bars throughout, eating the pasta and chicken at either lunch or dinner and the shake before bed, I stay full all day and my metabolism therefor stays pretty smooth without ever spiking. I'm sitting at about 140 lbs right now, and this is basically my diet. I was looking to get a gauge on what you guys think of it, and how much weight I could expect to gain, on average, weekly. I'm also drinking about a gallon of water per day, and am looking to start drinking fruit juice and take a multivitamin. any suggestions, tips or ideas on how long it should take me to reach my goal would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

hmm, yeah, see thats the thing, if theres some big flaw, then I'd appreciate someone saying, well, this isn't gonna work right here for this reason, not, "this sounds like shit", that really does nothing for me. I'm working my ass off and eating clean foods packed with protein and quality carbs, and getting appropriate rest, if thats not the formula for gaining lean body mass then I guess everything that I have read is just garbage.

Tell me where the majority of your nutrients are coming from big guy - are your protein sources from eggs, chicken, lean steak, tuna and fish? Are your carbs coming from things like sweet potatoes, brown rice, oats and whole wheat pastas? Are your fats omega 3 or 5 based and if so where are they coming from...

If you don't want to hear that your diet is shit then I suggest you keep reading grasshopper....

your diet is crap. yogurt, cereal, protein shakes and some pasta will get you no ware fast.

read the nutrition section. you need basic foods like, chicken, beef, fish, brown rice, yams, oatmeal, veggies etc..

ok, well, I figured, I'd be learning something coming here, not teaching..... the staple food I'm eating is kashi, it has 13 grams of protein per serving, considering I eat a box a day, thats 8 servings, thus 104 grams of protein from that alone. it also contains 10 grams of fiber per serving, 480mg of potassium, 1 gram of fat. as far as being a complete food standalone, thats about as solid a staple as you'll find buddy. as far as eating beef potatoes w/e w/e, fuck that, I'm not a woman and I don't take an hour out of my day to cook shit like that, I open a can of chicken breast and eat it with egg noodles, which b/c their enriched contain 8 grams of protein per cup and coupled with the chicken I'm getting about 42 grams worth of protein in that meal. the bars I eat are also high in protein, low in fat, I'm not reposting everything for those too. the point is, do your homework and read up before you just write someones diet off as bullshit, you don't know the make-up of what I'm eating but somehow determine its not good b/c its not your diet. but, if it raises your self worth to try and beat me down, then so be it, you obviously need the uplifting.

                  1. Foods like Kashi are NOT an effective source of protein. The protein in foods like that is SECONDARY to the protein, so it's NOT "about as solid a staple as you'll find". Enriched egg noodles, isn't going to do the trick either, buddy, so maybe you should do YOUR homework.

                  2. "I'm not a woman and I don't take an hour out of my day to cook shit like that". Let me tell you something- men AND women who are SERIOUS about this take the time to cook. So, before you come in here ripping on people who are disciplined enough to do this, you better check it at the door. Those of us who are in it to win it, cook our food maybe twice a week....we all aren't "women cooking an hour a day"...which is so chauvanistic I'm not even going there.

So maybe before you come in here with a big chip on your shoulder thinking you know it all, you should take some advice. I'll tell you the same thing everyone else is. For one, you need to be eating WHOLE FOODS to make gains. Bars and shakes just doesn't cut it. If you're staying "full all day", all that means is your body isn't using the nutrients you put in it. You need to be timing your meals 3 hours apart. It's not about beating you down. You said you wanted to make gains, and we;re trying to tell you how to do it.

YOGURT, KASHI, & ZONE BARS DON'T MAKE GAINS.

                    bwahahahahhaha :laughnew:

since you are on a teaching kick. how about you teach us about the fact that those 104 grams of protein you are eating is coming from an incomplete protein source. you being the teacher surely know about the amino acid profile of foods..

man this fucking guy just made my day.

If you were really interested in learning, you would shut your yap and stop defending your current diet. Processed foods are always inferior to whole foods. Get that through your skull, dude. You obviously came here expecting a different answer, which is neither here nor there, but that doesn't mean you can't accept the answer you got.

There are some knowledgable people on this board and they give sound advice. If you're such a smart guy, take their advice. You're only making yourself look like a fool.
