Because you're stomach is empty, you're burning fat stores and not the food you just ate.

What FB just said, but to take it one step further. It is believed that ingested carbs are readily available for up to 8 hours after they've been eaten for fuel.

The carbs are easier for your body to convert to fuel than fat, so that is why the body processes those first. If you've not eaten, then you'll tap into the fat stores which are harder to get into but are a higher grade energy source.

It is believed that when someone experiences their "second wind" it is the body converting from burning carbs to burning fats.

If you're intention is to burn fat, then I don't think you should eat any carbs before a.m. cardio. I believe a scoop of pure protein would be fine. Also, I don't think I'd recommend doing really hi intense cardio either as you could put muscle at risk of being utilized as fuel too...think skinny marathoners.

I'd drink a protein shake right before.

Like said above, if you eat and then do cardio, the energy from the food is being burned and not the fat on your body.
