  • Carb Backloading

Anyone try this? I've heard a lot about this lately and the science behind it, but basically it's no carbs until post workout and then you can eat all the carbs you want after that. And no breakfast is a big part of it.

No carbs until post workout? No way I could do that and have a productive workout. I feel weak and my energy doesn't stick around long if I don't have any carbs. Oatmeal before the gym works best for me.

It is called intermittent fasting and it seems to work for some people. Look up Martin Berkhan.

Yep, the guys I've seen who did it dropped bodyfat and preserved muscle.

I guess that would depend on gym time. I walk into the about 11 pm most nights. I would never wait that long for carbs. Is it not a certain time of day?

Yeah you need to work out between 3pm and 7pm for this to work the way it is designed. When you backload, if you eat enough carbs you won't fatigued when you hit the gym without them.

I read about it some more. Sounds interesting and somewhat different from Intermittent Fasting. In IF, you fast for 16 hours a day, say from 8pm to noon, and then pack all your calories into the 8 hour feeding window. So, you don't necessarily work out without carbs, but typically after 1 or 2 meals if you are working out in the afternoon.

Not going to work for me though - as a vegetarian, I don't really have any pure protein sources without tagalong carbs other than protein shakes.

Kind of sounds like a fasted cardio logic where your body can only burn fast, especially as you awake and don't eat carbs till noon
