  • Korean Beef

It sounds a lot fancier than it really is, but the flavor is really good for something different. The only bad part....is the sugar. I'm not sure if there is a way to get around it, without sacrificing flavor.

    1 pound lean ground beef
    1/4 cup brown sugar
    1/4 cup soy sauce
    1 Tablespoon sesame oil
    3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger, minced (I used ginger paste from a jar)
1/2 - 1 teaspoon crushed red peppers (to desired spiciness)
    salt and pepper
1 bunch green onions, diced (don't skip this!)

Heat a large skillet over medium heat and brown hamburger with garlic in the sesame oil. Drain most of the fat and add brown sugar, soy sauce, ginger, salt and pepper and red peppers. Simmer for a few minutes to blend the flavors. Serve over steamed rice and top with green onions.

Basically beef bulgogi using ground beef. I've never used sugar (but it is a common component in traditonal bulgogi). I add a little terriyaki to add some sweetness. I make this all the time using sirloin sliced as thin as you can get it prior to cooking. And cook the green onions with it (adding them at the end). Wrap in romaine lettuce leaves to eat.

Pretty sure there is NO replacement for the real thing, because that is so good! But for something *really* quick and simple, this was tasty.

I think I have had something like that at a Korean BBQ place before. Those ingredients are right up my ally. Prep time?

I would imagine 10 to 15 minutes using the ground beef however when I use the sirloin I let it marinate for a couple of hours and then I put on my grill in a skillet with holes in it.

Took less than 10 minutes to do the beef and chop the green onion. Put over rice and you're done. Quick!
