  • Remember to rinse off your quinoa!

I just got done talking to a nurse and luckily my allergic reaction is not too severe. I forgot to rinse off my quinoa and formed an allergic reaction to the outer coating (saponin), so, I am going to have a lovely night followed by early morning meetings. :retard:

Wow, I didn't know that. I've eaten quinoa before and don't remember washing it.

If the saponin is not taken off by the company you buy it from you need to rinse it off or it makes the quinoa bitter, and that is the end of it for most people, unfortunately I am one of the rare individuals that has a reaction to the saponin.

No kidding. I'll remember this for next time. I always rinse off my rice before cooking but never thought about doing it to quinoa for some reason. Maybe cause I buy pre flavored quinoa.

The site for that link was about reactions to quinoa so only people who had reactions and are looking for answers to their symptoms are likely to respond. Other places I've looked for information describe the allergy as being very rare and all you have to do to avoid it is make sure that outer coating is off via a thorough rinse.

Still seems very odd. I've never even heard of this before. I just looked at my quinoa, since it happened to be what I'm making for dinner tonight, and I don't see ANYthing about that on the packaging. Wonder if it's on organic quinoa, too?

Just do a Google search for, rinse quinoa, if you want to get more indepth on how it affects the flaver or search, saponin reaction, if you want to learn about the reaction some ppl get. There are plenty of articles out there.
