  • How Much Protein In Your Diet?

You guys all stick to the 1 gram per pound of bodyweight rule or try to go for more?

I'm at 4 meals per day each with 55-60 grams so that averages out to 230 grams of protein per day.

Here's the question though, I've lived by the "1 gram per pound" rule for so long that I don't know how I would look if I consistently ate a bit more. So for example what if I bumped my protein up to 70-75 grams per meal? Would my body use it? Would it make much of a difference going from 230 grams per day to 300 grams per day? Anyone have any real experience with this sort of experiment? Is there any real science on how much protein someone on AAS uses VS a natural person?

I feel like this is something we all just do as a rule but don't actually question the small details. Sometimes details are important if we are to totally understand our bodies.

How many grams you guys getting per meal?

I don't watch my protein intake to a science, in other words, I just eat a good solid 3 to 4 meals a day that without a doubt have the protein I need to sustain my body composition. If I want to put on more weight. What I do is increase carbs, it's that easy for me. I don't get all hung up on the theory as you have posted.

I've read a lot on this and there are 3 major schools of thought. Nutritionists want us to have around 1g per kg at the most. Some bodybuilders say you need up to 1g per lbs but I'm reading that a lot of fitness gurus are now saying that's too much, 1g per lbs is plenty sufficient.

Edit: I meant to say 1.5g per lbs is what a lot of bodybuilders take and 1g is what a lot of fitness gurus are touting now.

First of all, nutritionists are targeting the average schmoe, not the active athlete. Generally, between 1-1.5g per lb of body weight is considered to be the appropriate value for athletes. Honestly, it is hard to do a whole lot less than that if you want to hit something like a 40/40/20 C/P/F macro ratio, or even a 50/30/20 C/P/F ratio. If you go any less, you can't get your cals without blowing your carb or fat budget, imo.

Ok so it's safe to say that for athletes in general 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight is the best guideline to follow.

Should that be increased for someone on steroids? Do we have real science that says steroids make the body better at using more of the protein that we eat or is this just accepted fact in the bro science world? It seems obvious but do we actually know this as fact?

I know a lot of guys that go 1.5grams per pound minimum, as much as 2 while on gear but I wouldn't exactly say they are very lean either.
