  • Tilapia - is it good/bad for you?

So I've been eating chicken/turkey for the past 3yrs or so constantly, I'd say 98% of everything I take in is only that. I don't eat pork or any type of meat for a few reasons and one of them being how bloated and shitty it makes me feel until it exits my stomach.

I eat meat and pork, just about once or twice a month tops. Many studies have shown tilapia is not good for you if consumed quite a bit. However, many athletes and or pros eat it on a daily basis and has me thinking. Are these studies a bit overrated?

Are those studies done on people who live a healthy lifestyle and perhaps wouldn't have a negative effect on them?

I was very tempted last night while we went food shopping to buy 6lbs of tilapia and cook it, but this topic came to mind. We buy salmon and swordfish and neither of them are farm raised and gets pricey, which is fine. But to spend $75 every week on just salmon and swordfish NOT including reg groceries, well it gets steep.

We spend right now $150(on just food) every 10 days and IMO, that's not bad at all.

I'd like to hear or read everyone's thoughts on this, I'd be curious to know.

    I need variety people :D

Its a fine source of protein so IMO there is nothing wrong with it. The bad rep comes from the very nature of the fish. It's a bottom feeder like flounder so its diet is whatever falls to the ocean floor including shit of other animals etc..

But I don't see how thats an issue since we are only eating the muscles of the fish. Not like we are eating it's organs and digestive system.

High in mercury is the issue bro.

If you look into it, tilapia of all fishes is said not to be consumed much, should be kept minimal.

We have a few stores here where I can buy fresh seafood ED....and when I say fresh, it's from the same day caught. ..so it's fish from my own backyard sort of speak.

Tilapia is a freshwater fish so I really don't know about mercury levels, but like Bouncer said, it is a bottom feeder.

Read into it if you can. It's been said to consume only once a week.

Every athlete I train with basically eats it like i eat chicken, and many bbrs pros do the same.

I'd still eat it, I just wouldn't eat it all day everyday.

Here's the thing about health articles in general. If you want to find something negative, you WILL find it. So for example you search for "dangers of broccoli" and you will come across article after article about how it can absorb insecticides and how it can cause a colon blockage etc.. After about 4 articles you come away with the belief that broccoli is actually bad for you!

My point is this. Your not wrong to read up on the food your putting into your body, thats a good thing. But try to keep it all in perspective and in context.

FWIW Tilapia for being a fresh water fish has some of the cleanest white meat you can find on fillets. In moderation you should be good to go.

I see what you're saying but broccoli is good for you regardless of wtf I'd read:) tilapia is a well known fish that some call it a fake fish lol
....to its defense, it shouldn't be classified with others like salmon or fishes that give you a good source of Omega vits....this I think hurts it and for that reason, they say eat other fish. I don't eat fish for the omega nutrition, I eat fish for the protein and almost nonexistent fat content

yea it's just pure protein really. if you want omega 3's ya gotta go with the fatty fishes.

eat the talapia bro, don't waste it. but have it here and there if you're concerned with it.

I cant eat it bc I know how its farmed and what it eats being a bottom feeder

honestly I'm grossed out by it.
