  • Low carb diet and training question

Ok........I have a question concerning training and low carb diets. I'm about as far from a rocket scientist as they get so if I offend anybody by asking a "dumb" question everybody knows the answer to, please forgive me. I'm just beginning to learn how the body works and I am very curious as to why I feel the way I do under these conditions.
Anyway...here goes. Just for the hell of it I decided to try one of the low carb diets I've been hearing about for the last 5 years. So, I cut out all carbs other than those in the miracle whip and pickle relish I use to make tuna fish for a period of about a month and a half. The first 2 weeks or so was absolute hell. Of course I had cravings but that wasn't the least of my problems. It was weird, I'd be doing cardio and though I'd be sweating like hell and have my heartbeat jacked thru the roof; I'd feel like I could go to sleep at any second - constantly yawning and couldn't keep my eyes open. Every time I'd train I'd feel weak and a massive lactic acid burn which I understand. But the thing that gets me is one day in the middle of cardio it all just stopped and I felt like I was on some kind of high......all the time. I was more alert, could focus 100 times better than ever before and was never tired. I went from sleeping a min of 10 hours a day to roughly 5. When I did cardio I was able to use higher intensities at faster rpms and never felt weak or any burn whatsoever. When I'd lift I could actually "feel" my muscles to a level I've never known. It used to be I'd do curls and when I hit failure that was it - it didn't hurt or anything - I just couldn't do anymore. But with no carbs I could feel the blood rushing and the lactic acid building up. My strength shot up dramatically; my overall size did not change that I'm aware of but I became much more defined and more solid. Once in awhile I'd eat a biscuit or two and my body temperature would skyrocket and I'd feel like the damn energizer bunny in overdrive. So, I started eating carbs again thinking I'd feel that way all of the time. And after one good meal chalked full of potatos and whatnot everything went to hell. I went to sleep for about 18 hours straight and in the days following when I'd go to train it was like I was back at square one. I just dont understand it. Can anybody give me any sort of explanation on what was going on in my body during this whole ordeal; as to why I felt the way I did under those different circumstances?? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

all i know to tell you is that you have to eat carbs if youre going to be training with high intensity. carbs give you energy. i can understand why you felt bad at first, but i dont know what to tell you about the whole other thing.

First off everyone's body reacts differently to different stimuli, thus the reason to always try new things.

Best Guess, is in reality deleting carbs in your diet, probably meant eliminating lot's of food that were full of chemicals, in essence you were eating clean. Your body over a period of a month flushed out all the toxins and your body started to operate under optimal conditions, ie, less junk your body needed to process means all the good stuff just got used for neccesities sake.

Sleepiness and carbs etc. Start to do research on insulin and insulin sensitivity, obviously some are more sensitive than others.

I respond very similar to what you have experienced to carbs. I only need 100 grams a day of carbs to operate optimally and still train hard, granted this is not a program I grow muscle on yet, it is my optimal maintenance level where I feel my best almost all the time. And most importantly that includes my own energy levels and ability to focus.

Lots of carbs for me stimulates my brain to think at the speed of light, and all kinds of wild idea's, which is not optimal for focus of individual tasks.

I could go on and on.

Best Suggestions is buy the book, "Carbohydrate Addiction" . There are dozens of books about insulin and insulin sensitivity yet of the 20 or so I've read this is by far the best and easiest to understand with real world practicality.
