BIDEN AND HATCH SEEK TO BAN DESIGNER STEROIDS

Bipartisan Bill Would Make Androstenedione and THG Schedule III Substances
    Friday, October 24, 2003

WASHINGTON, DC -- Late last night U.S. Senators Joe Biden (D-DE) and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) introduced The Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2003, which will add androstenedione (also known as “andro”), tetrahydrogestrinone (THG), and other steroid precursors to the list of anabolic steroids that are classified as Schedule III controlled substances. Senators Charles Grassley (R-IA) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) are co-sponsors of the bill.

Steroid precursors, or "pro-steroids," are chemically related to the substances scheduled in the 1990 Controlled Substances Act that made trafficking in steroids illegal. When ingested, these substances metabolize into testosterone or other illicit steroids. The United States Anti-Doping Agency, the group in charge of testing Olympic athletes for performance enhancing drugs, has called these products "the functional equivalent of steroids." Many physicians, parents and coaches have called for action against these dangerous products.

"Products like andro and other pro-steroids are marketed to kids and young athletes as an effective way to increase muscle mass. However, I have serious concerns about the safety of these substances," said Biden. "The manufactures of these products are violating the spirit of the Controlled Substances Act and putting young people at risk." "I have been extremely frustrated by the lack of regulatory action on these performance-enhancing products," Hatch said. "For years, I have asked the FDA to explain how these dangerous products could be marketed freely to our teens, but I've never received an adequate response. Our hand has been forced - we must act to ensure no more young athletes are placed at risk."

A 2001 survey conducted by Blue Cross Blue Shield's Healthy Competition Foundation indicated that approximately one million kids nationwide have used performance enhancing products. Many of these kids are unaware of the adverse effects these substances can have on their bodies. In addition to stunting growth, pro-steroid use can lead to a wide range of side effects - everything from increased blood pressure and elevated risk of heart attack to significant changes to sexual organs. As a result, andro and other steroid precursors have been banned by the International Olympic Committee, the National Football League, and the National Collegiate Athletics Association.

"It is time we started being honest and calling andro and other steroid precursors what they really are: drugs. Performance enhancing drugs. They should be labeled as such. They should be treated as such and they should be controlled in the same manner as other anabolic steroids," concluded Biden.

"Our major sports organizations are banning pro-steroids because they know what our kids don't: that these substances carry serious risks," Hatch added. "The federal government must take action. This bill will give our regulatory agencies the precise tools necessary to ensure that consumers have the choice of safe, health-enhancing products without these potentially dangerous side-effects."

The Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2003 has four main components that will help protect young people from the dangers of pro-steroid abuse: First, it amends the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 1990 by adding substances such as andro, THG, and their chemical cousins to the list of anabolic steroids controlled under the Controlled Substances Act and makes it easier for the DEA to add similar substances to that list in the future.

Second, it directs the U.S. Sentencing Commission to review the Federal sentencing guidelines for crimes involving anabolic steroids and consider increasing them. Currently, the maximum sentence for offenses involving anabolic steroids is only 33 - 41 months for first time offenders. And to receive the maximum sentence an offender would have to have between 40,000 and 60,000 units, which is defined as a 10 cc vial or 50 tablets.

Third, the bill authorizes $15 million for the Secretary of Health and Human Services to award grants to public and non-profit entities to carry out science-based education programs in elementary and secondary schools to highlight the harmful effects of anabolic steroids.

Finally, the bill provides $1 million to the Secretary of Health and Human Services to include questions about steroid use in the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an annual survey to measure the extent of alcohol, drug and tobacco use in the United States.

The Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2003 is strongly supported by a broad cross-section of the medical and sports communities. Organizations who have endorsed the bill include: The American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, Association of Tennis Professionals, Boys and Girls Clubs, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, Council for Responsible Nutrition, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, Consumer Healthcare Products Association, Major League Baseball, The National Athletic Trainers Association, The National Collegiate Athletic Association, The National Football League, The National High School Athletic Coaches Association, National Nutritional Foods Association, American Herbal Products Association, United States Anti-Doping Agency, U.S. Olympic Committee, U.S. Soccer Federation, USA Cycling, USA Swimming, USA Track and Field, and The Utah Natural Products Alliance.

    BS..

Sorry to be blunt, but this is horseshit..

The only reason that they are concerned about the steroids becoming more prevelent is that they want to protect their sports heros. They have to give the illusion (and don't be fooled, that is all it is) that pro sports are filled with competetors that are "clean" and using chemicals to achieve their goals..

Here is their real problem. If they did not ban steroids, and allowed steroid enhanced atheletes into pro sports (without fear of testing), it would be almost impossible for a non-juiced person to compete. Therefore, it would almost be a prerequiste that anyone trying to break into pro sports start to juice, and risk their health in the process. Not saying that this does not happen already, but it would just be more of an issue. For certain sports, it would come down to who has a better chemist, and who is willing to take more of a risk with the drugs. This is an unacceptable situation for a country that holds sports heros up as legends. Therefore, steroids must be banned in all pro sports in order to have a "level" playing field. That's problem number 1.

Problem number 2 is a bit stickier. See, if you ban steroids in pro sports leagues, but do not make them illegal for the rest of the world, you have another problem. People my disagree with me on this, but here is what I see happening. You will start to have juiced people break the records and accomplishments of world record holders (unjuiced). Again, this DOES already happen, but nothing along the level it would occur with legal juice in this country. This would be most noticiable in sports with "absolute" numbers. You will have 2 world records for the 100 meter sprint. One with juice, and one without. And the list goes on and on; there will be 2 records for just about any endurance or strength activity that exists. And the real problem with that is American culture. We want ONE winner, not two. So, the question arises, who is really the best? And, in my eyes, people would turn to the juiced athletes as the "true" record holders. People love to see AMAZING things.. We love the World's Strongest Man, BB shows, etc. We want to see things that are inhuman. And therefore, we are going to be primarily drawn to the "juiced" records and achivements because they are going to be the best.

Again, the problem comes back to pro sports. So, we have these 2 classes of competition, juiced and without. And, as people start to get more and more used to the idea, they start to see the "real" record holders as the steroid enhanced records. This creates a large problem for people trying to break into the record books, and make a name for themselves. They MUST take juice in order to not only compete, but to make money as a pro in the sports world (again, please do not flame, I realize this situation does exist to some extent already. I am just giving my ideas on what would happen if tommorow I could go to Rite Aid and buy Sust).. This is a bad situation. Although we all know that juice is not good for us, we have a choice if we want to take it or not. In this situation, any pro athelete would have no say in the matter; to be a pro, they have to do this.

This would lead to situations where people were taking insane and stuid risks with their lives in order to be the best at their sport. It would become a chemists race to make the next big thing to pack some pounds on, or increase speed or stamina. Now, because of the restrictions and testing, athletes have to have a "somewhat" restrained use of roids in sports, or else get caught and be banned. But, remove the negative feedback, and you will get people who will do ANYTHING, and take ANYTHING to be the best.

This is really the reason that I think our govenment has a compaign against roids. They MUST protect pro sports at all costs; too much money is made, too many heros held up, and too many people involved to allow that industry to collapse. Come on, what's the other option? You think the govt gives a living shit if you put on 20lbs of muscle in 4 weeks? Why? It just does not make sense; they have NO reason to care whatsoever. And you think that the govt is worried that we are all going to destroy our livers and die? Nope, wrong again.. Look at the 2 drugs that you can buy without a script; liquor and cigs. Although I have NO research to support this, I would wager a large bet that, accounting to the widely different useage patterns for liquor and cigs as compared to roids, the 2 legal drugs are FAR more deadly and damaging then roids on every single level. Would have to do 25 week cycles of Anadrol/250mg/day to even come close to the danger of the legal drugs (ok, that is TOTALLY a made up stat right there.. I hope your getting my point... You would have to be a roid psycho to do damage to your body like cigs and liquor will do).. Again, it all comes back to pro sports.. They must be protected at all costs, the "integrity of the game" (that always makes me laugh) MUST be preserved.

Now, all of this legislation and bullshit posturing could not come at a worse time for America. Look around you someday (not while your in the gym either, asshole).. Look at the condition of the people around you on a regular basis. How much weight should they be losing? Obesity is on its way to becoming the new epedimic in this country. People are dropping dead left and right simply because they refuse to set foot in the gym and exercise like a sane person should.

And, for my final point (if I am not banned already), I will just quickly touch on the obesity thing. Why are people so fat? Why don't they go to the gym? Well, they are fat because they eat shit all day long.. That's not going to change no matter how much anabolics you give them. But why not go to the gym? Because, as I am sure EVERYONE on this board can attest, its really FUCKING hard to make any progress in the gym. Your body is attempting to maintain an equilibrium at all times; its happy with your 32% bf, it means you will live a long time if all the food goes away tommorow (and for your sake, I hope it does if your bf is that high). It does not want to build muscle... Muscle takes energy to maintain, fat takes almost none.. And fat stores more calories as well.. Muscle is a liablity.

So, people go into the gym for a few months, workout (not as hard as they should) don't see dick for results (because they do not change thier diet, or for lots of other reasons as well) and quit. They decide its just easier to be fat and die then to be built and have to work so hard every day. But, as many of us know, there is nothing like going to the gym when you have AAS surging through your body. Not only does your body literally transform before your eyes, but fat sheds off, you feel fantastic (except for that damn abcess.. Goddamn it.. Clean your injection sites!) and you can actually make some progress in the gym! People want quick fixes in this society. If you have somone overweight come to you for training, and you tell them that its going to take YEARS before they can see their abs show, they are never going to make that kind of commitment. Come on, people don't stay married that long anymore! :) But, if you take someone, put them on Clen and DNP (not saying this is a good idea at all, DNP is very dangerous, just for illustration) and tell them in 3 months they will be down to a 32 waist with abs, they might actually stick with it. (For some people, its just never fast enough.. Thank god for gastric bypass and plastic surgery)..

The point I am trying to make above is NOT that every fat person should be taking exotic drugs.. Its just that people need to see results. And it can be maddening to go the gym every day and see shit (and its the reason that lots of us take pictures every month or so.. So we can actually see some progress) and some people (I would hesitate to say MOST people.. Again, take a look around, how many people do you see everyday that are really in shape? If you don't live in Miami or Hollywood, its probably not that high a percentage) just will not do it. They want results, and they want them now. We all know you can easily put on 15-25 lbs of muscle in a few months with the help of AAS and a good workout program. That make a HUGE difference to the looks of most people. But, without serious dedication and sacrifice, how much can you expect in a year of working out? Maybe 10lbs? I would've been thrilled if I gained 10lbs last year (I have been totally natural for about the past 14 months).. Its just too slow for most people to accept, they can't stick with it for that amount of time.

All right.. Let the flaming begin.. Basically, if you don't feel like reading the book that I just wrote, here are the main points:

    1) Steroids cannot be legal because pro sports will never be the same.. There is just too much money and political power in that arena to let it be changed by drugs.

    2) Steroids could help many people get the results they want from working out, and encourage them to live a healtier and more active lifestyle (duh?)

    3) Steroids are far less dangerous then other things that people do legally.. Gastric bypasses, drinking, smoking, prescription drugs for weight loss, plastic surgery (ok, I realize that is kind of a wierd list.. This is a long message, let me slide).

    4) This is a situation that is NEVER going to be resolved. We must create the illusion of compliance with the law. I would say its like a boob job for a girl. They want to create the illusion of real boobs, even though most people will know they are fake. Go to any good gym. People are not talking openly about steroids, or taking their site injections in the bathrooms. But you look at the builds and KNOW they are chemically enhanced.

If anyone takes the time to read this entire message, more power to ya. I think that I made some valid points in here, but I could just be really wacked because my gym is closed on Sundays and I have nothing to do. :) I hope I made some valid points in here, and would love to hear some conflicting/contrasting views.

Puma u make some valid points (Besides the fact this is older news ;) )

      But one main reason:

I AM upset that andros are being banned. But their truly are just to many ppl with insufficient information doing harm to themselves. This is with andro, let alone anabolic steroids. Its just to dangerous for ignorant ppl, which will outnumber us who have a huge wealth of knowledge through eachother.

        haha..

I think you caught me.. My reply had just about nothing to do with the topic of the first post. I just had to vent a little bit about what I see as a problem in our society that has solutions, but because of politics, no way to move forward towards that solution.

And I do agree with you. There are people who fuck themselves up big time with roids. I often overhear people talking at the gym, and discussing their cycles, and I just aghast at what they are doing to themselves. That said, however, the solution to the lack of knowledge is to bring steroids from locker room talk into the doctors or trainers office. This site and others like it, are a great first step to making steroid use safer and more scientific, looking at total drug profiles rather then just the amount of lbs someone gains. However, it seems that most bb'ers in my area don't take the time to research their drugs and cycles fully, often with bad or horriable side effects.. I have asked several people in my gym who were taking A50 what they were taking for protection. By the look in their eyes, I really think they thought I was talking about condoms. That's not a good thing at all, and something that could be totally eliminated if we stopped this locker room drug swap, and started getting sports doctors and trainers involved (who, at the present time, are also quite underinformed about safe steroid use).

Again, just my 2 cents though.. :)

Hey that was a very quality post man.

Very true, very true. If there was a sufficient way to use AAS and having to go through doctors ect it would be a dream come true. Made me laugh about the doctors/trainers being uniformed, just to true in many cases ha...

Its just to bad man...But we cant leave out, that even used correctly AAS can still be dangerous, they are drugs. Just like Alcohal/Tobacco.

Ya I mean...even friends around me, ppl i see in the local max muscle ect, just shoving whatever they can down their throat to get bigger without let alone, not knowing how much/what it is, but what it can rlly do yto ur body. But although much of the blame goes on the consumers shoulders, some of it must also be put on companies/advertisment. I think u realize why as well as I do.

Although I will prob never do AAS (With the exception of my 1 M1T cycle) I still believe from the knowledge I havbe aquired that when used correctly, they arnt totally dangerous and can help ppl build not only betgter bodies, but confidence, well being, ect.

Doctors....ask them ... they'll tell you they know everyting...and if the don't <direct quote from when I was 22 and a Ex Phys Mjr> "Well -MR ZHOWIE- lets just look at the big black book.........*thumbs to anabolic steriods* it says her that it may be scripted for people that have a disease that inhibits muscle growth *pokes me in chest* ... NOPE that's not you...or for someone that has just undergone a procedure that has rendered them immobile for 6mo or greater *shakes his head like a tool*...Now lets look at the side effects *they read like all anti aas propaganda until he hits one* enlargement of eroginated male sexual organ during therapy ...uhhh not sure why that would happen but ... uhhh... you see their bad for you and you dont need them and no I will not write the bloodwork so that your insurance will pay for it."

WELL THANKS DOC! I didn't even ask for a script I just wanted to monitor my chem levels while on cycle...I actually educated him a bit bout the shaft enlargement and he said "well if in fact you do have close to 1L more blood running through your body, that might explain alot of the other side effects" AHHAHA at that point I was like OK doc take your hand out of my ass and ...er ... I mean I left!

At that point I was just in my first or second semester of SES classes---I was a pre-med student for the first 2.5 years (like everyone else) until I did an internship with a GP over the summer and realized that I HATE SICK PEOPLE!

After that I tried to not listen to ANYONE....NOT the Drug dealer in the gym that is more concerned with his own economic well being than my ass, OR the AMA/DEA and their over the top scare tactics (i.e. ALL AAS cause a1-ZZ236 side effects...ummm clen is concidered an AAS by the AMA/DEA)

WOW I'm really not sure I had a point....OH YEA I personally am NOT that broken up about a ban on Pro-Hormones. I would rather see people take an advanced form of their hormone of choice than to jack with "andro", DHEA, or any thing of that nature.

This is a bit outdated but it is from a study conducted back around 2G (while I was still in College) of the blood serum levels of the "sex" hormones while taking X ammount of Androstine Dione (not a NOR or Diol)

            Chlosterol --- X --- X --- X --- DHEA --- "Andro" --< Testostrone (121% increase of serum levels) AND Estrogen (357% increase of serum levels)

When all the stuff hit the market no studies were conducted/published about the effect of andro on estrogen levels in healthy male subjects of any age.

Part of my final presentation (and was planned as the basis for my thesis in grad school) Was a TRUE look at the world of AAS vs. the legal supplements.

ANDRO is just 1 step away from test AND estrogen (how do you think test converts) and to me is something I ALWAYS strongly discouraged. If someone was INSISTANT on taking it I would pull them into my office and introduce them to some helpful research material about AAS.

-What a scatterbrained post...forgive me I am @ work talking to our nation full of idiots on the phone! DONT ASK
