  • Hurting Shoulder

I have been getting shooting pains when I bench or do dumbbell incline presses. It dosn't matter if I use 135lbs or 225 lbs it still affects my benching. Is there anything I can do to help this pain go away?

might have rotator cuff problems, may want to take it easy for a little bit...or try doing some rotator exercises

I had the same problem... I skipped all chest and shoulder exercises for 2 weeks - only did arms and legs so that my shoulder got a break.

I also started doing rotator cuff exercises - do a google search on "rotator cuff exerciese" and you'll get lots of hits. A good one is:
      http://familydoctor.org/265.xml

I do these every day before my workout - takes only about 5-10 minutes.

Also, the first time I benched, I dropped the weight to about 60-70% of normal and was meticulous about form and that helped. I think in looking back, I piled on the weights too fast and did a couple of sets with poor form which is probably what aggravated my shoulder problem in the first place.

Good luck, bro! Shoulder problems are the worst - it is a bitch to not do chest or shoulders for a week or two, but believe me, your shoulder will thank you and you will come back stronger - I have already set a PR for DB presses since my layoff.

Thanks for the help, I figure it is my rotator cuff. I will try these exercises for a while and see if that helps.

I was off work for 4 months with rotator cuff problem, its not a joke, I would give anything to have a 100% healthy shoulder again. I don't want surgery so I did physio for about 6 hours a week to help it, it helped it, but its not the same. Go get it checked by your doc or local physiotherapist.

Let me encourage you...Years ago I got a bounce on some 75lb dumbell shoulder pressess followed by immediate pain in my left shoulder. Being as juiced as I was I continued to train through the pain from that point on every time I did shoulders. It got so bad all I could lift with my left shoulder was 5lbs. I finally got the hint and stopped training them for a while and wala...back to normal. I know that no injury is a laughing matter...Preventing injuries through proper form and reasonable weight is the key to a successful effort in the gym...If I were you I would ice and heat my injury alternatly and discontinue my shoulder workout until it was 100%...You can always work aroung a damaged area and in the long run you will be better off...Surgery is ALWAYS the LAST resort...IMO

yeah when you bring the barbells down past 90 degress your shoulder is a full inch out of the socket, And at its weakest point, do you really want to put 225lbs of pressure on your shoulders at their weakest point...no definatley not. so yeah take it from mr. shoulders advice obviously he's doing alright now take it easy when it comes to shoulders..do some rehab exercises and give it some rest
