I'm out for anabolism as well, but every where I go, every one is saying that you can't grow unless you're lifting as heavy as possible. I think the reasoning goes something like heavy lifting alerts the body that the muscle needs to become stronger in order to cope with the stresses being placed on it. In order to become stronger, the muscle must become bigger. I don't know what to think now.

but remember in evolutionary terms the body DOES NOT want muscle. it is an inefficient way to live/survive. too much body heat is produced as well as the maintenance cost is high as we all can attest too ;) . Merely training with heavy weights makes your body WANT to lift the weight but it has other options than to put muscle on. CNS effeciency is a major one. it learns to recruit less muscle fibers more effeciently over time with the same exercise in order to lift it. so even though you might go up 50 pounds on the bench press your body might not have even needed to put any amount of muscle on to accomplish that. also remember lifting heavy might take you out of your optimum time-under-tensions for a specific muscle group. Muscles that need a bit longer sets will not get the stimulation they need to grow if they are only challenged with short heavy sets.

here is an article as well to expand on it. http://www.exercisecertification.com...les/semper.pdf
