  • Question for StoneCold

When post your different workouts, I notice that the "classic" weightlifting movements(i.e. squat, deadlift, bench press) are often missing. Any reason?

I can't bench cuz I am not built for it. long arms and shallow chest are not good for benching. I do squat and deadlift. if you look in the anabolic section in the thread where my name is spelled "Coldstone54" you can see my workout on the third page of posts.

hey stone cold, i have a similar build as far as the long arms and shallow chest go. what do u do instead of bench? isn't bench almost a necessity for gaining size and power? did u start with it at least? sorry for the 21 questions, just interested

I think he does standing cable crossovers. Stonecold, have you tried bench pressing more often??? You should try it if only doing them every so often with your routine is giving you no gains.....

I feel absolutley no contraction at all in my chest with a standard bench press. so there is no reason to do them at all. I did bench through my high school years and some in college but all I got for it was hurt shoulders. I reached 250 pounds once and I was happy with that. And I would say no it is not necessary to build a good chest. I would go as far as too say it is probably the least affective chest exercise. My routine revolves around Dips, Close-grip machine presses, Incline dumbell (even these are hard sometimes), Hammer strength bench and cable crossovers.

its like i dont remember if it was here on the net or a magazine wihere i body builder said he built his chest using machines and cables as where the presses didnt do jack to him. I think it varies from person to person.
Peronally I do not like incline bb presses, I prefer the machine or the dumbells. Same goes for butterflies, I dont like them, prefer pec dec or cable cross overs. When I say i dont like them is because I dont feel anything, even at slow speeds.

Bench presses recently hasnt been doing anythng to me, im doing the dumbells instead.

I agree with Stonecold in that dips are a far superior chest building exercise than bench. People often don't know but the primary function of the pectoral muscle is to bring the arm across the body, as in a fly motion, not to horizontally press soemthing. Everyone judges a person by what they bench, when in fact it's not a very good judge of upper body strength at all...the bent-over row would be a better judge of that.

This may sound sacreligous, but I don't do flat bench presses at all as I never got anything out of them really. I could do nothing but flat bench for a month and not get any growth like I do with my setup now. I love flys and I feel I get more out of them than anything else in my workout.
