  • Running VS Jumping Rope....

My question is fairly simple, and looking through the archives I have found no questions to use as reference so basically can jumping rope be a substitute for running? Or are we better of running as a primary source of cardio?

your better off running but running (not jogging) is pretty intense and more demanding, so it would be better to break up the running with skipping so as you don't burn yourself out, cardio is about prolonged activity not fast twitch explosion

Doesn't the body burn off more calories with a fast pace cardio? Wouldn't u say that jumping rope can be as intense as running if you do it right. And what if it is simply for weight maintenance rather than weight loss.

        Jumping rope FOR SURE.

I do both. Rope is way more intense.

Go ahead and jump rope for 5 straight minutes. Then come back and tell me what you think.

jumping rope is better as it is less hard on your body...Do NOT do cardio to lose weight...it is not effective unless you are doing a contest and need to FORCE your body to lose the last few pounds. And for the most EFFECIENT method do interval training. 30 seconds of intense work followed by 1:00min of less intense training and this only needs to be done for a MAX of 10-15 minutes a few times a week.

(Woops i accidently pressed enter!) But like I was saying...in my home town I used to run at night almost every night. The thing is it was safe enough in that town to take a nice jog at 11:00 pm. Then I moved to Sacramento and I basically dont want to get stabbed while im jogging. I did that because I hate running in the tread mill, so I was thinking to replace my jog with jump roping. Simply to keep in shape and for weight maintenance. What do u guy's think?

The rope is definately a good option and yes I suppose if you skip real fast it could just about be as intense as running, but then if you run fast...?

If I skip I try do like 100 a time, 200 a time and so on to keep my mind focused.

Yup jumpin rope is much harder.try to go for a minute first(I know it dosen't sound like much but three sets of one minute will make you work as hard as good pace of jogging.).also jumping rope is great for calfs, arms and posterior delts.
Also here is a simple formula for a good cardio work out.now this ofcourse depends on your fitness level but this covers almost any one in a safe way.
                  220-your age=your max heart rate
now take min 60% of your max heart rate and go at least for 20mins.as you get in better cardiovascular shape take higher purcentage and you can go as high as 80 or 85% of your max heart rate.your best bet is the purchase a heart rate monitor so it can tell you wich zone you are in like cardio, fat buring or muscle burning zone.you deffinitaley wanna stay away from the muscle burning zone. so at the end it really dosen't matter what you do for cardio as long as you are in your targert zone.it all depends on what you wanna do like do you want low or high impact.Ok this is gonna get confusing but anyways just follow the formula and have fun.just don't get stabbed.:D
