  • Cardio v. Calorie Deficit

Kind of a basic question, but I did some research and not sure I have a clear understanding.

why is it necessary to do cardio to lose bf? The reason I ask is because of this thread:

    http://www.superiormuscle.com/vbulle...o&pagenumber=2

CG says that he does no cardio ... just cuts using diet.

So, is it possible to cut with diet alone?

*I'm not a expert in this area others on this site know MUCH more. Heres my short answer.

Cardio maximizes bodyfat loss during a diet. Just to name a few cardio increases catecholamines levels which promotes fat loss. Also helps to combat a slow metabolism (which is believed most ppl have) or pre-existing thyroid condition.

Its also believed the stubborn fat (lower back/abs) is tough to get rid of because these areas are not as vascular (blood flow) as other fats on the body (like viseral fat). In short, cardio will improve this.

From what I have read yes low bf% can be accomplish on by diet alone (males only, genetically females carry more bodyfat and will need cardio to get super lean). If you choice not to do cardio it is recommened the workouts be of the high intensity variety - short rest periods (30-60secs), high reps (10-15).

A diet with lowered clean carbs and health fats will help block fat mobilization (storing fat) and improve insulin sensitivity (storing fat) which should make you lean and mean.

If your using "gear" a lot of these fat storing mechanisms are haulted (just to gloss over it quickly). I dont know much about or focused on this. So dont hold me to it.

I read a few books recently inquiring the same thing.

Yes you can diet and get cut without any cardio.

Problem with this is that is not healthy and it can be said to be easier to do cardio and get cut as you don't have to restrict the calories much. Cardio is key to a healthy heart and I find, even though I only do it once a week that improves my capacity during leg/back sessions.

Some of the biggest advocates of zero cardio are now dead of heart failure/attack

How so? This is his question.

I know what your trying to say it just isnt completely correct plus it doesnt have much to do with his question. His question was about getting cut lossing bf not cardiovascular health.

Maybe so...However, incorporating a high intensity routine you can achieve as good cardiovascular health as your getting right now (like I said) i.e 30-60 secs rest between sets, high volume of reps. Have you ever done a high intensity workout? If you did you would know what im talking about.

I dont believe this to be true unless these advocates are professional bobybuilders you are talking about. ppl who using gear are at a higher risk for clogged arteries. Well documented.
I would concern myself with these other well known factors for hear disease: genetics, saturated fat/cholesterol intake, blood pressure, and exercise (in that order).

For cardiovascular health your way off. Most health care professionals (cardiologists) im read about recommended min.30-60mins a day of exercise. Im not saying I do this....Who has that time? -lol

Personally I think It has to do with genetics. Sure doing no cardio is unhealthy, but guys like dexter jackson and stan Mcquay have teenie little 30 inch waist even in the off season. Both these guys looked like bodybuilders even before they started lifting weights.
I hear these guys do cardio maybe the last month or so leading up to a show, if even that much.

Guys like that are definatley the minority in bodybuilding, they make me sick.

            Agreed.
These guys are genetically elite individuals and use drugs. Like most professional athletes.

The average person can STILL accomplish very low bf% through diet and drugs (ephedera/caffene, clen., green tea, etc. or elicet)
            High intensity workout.

thanks for the comments / thoughts.

Genetically, I'm skinny. So, I'm going to try to cut without cardio and see how far I can get.

What does your diet look like? Maybe you should consider posting your diet for critique.

Protein should come from lean sources, such as:
                skinless chicken breasts,
                egg whites,
                fish,
                turkey breasts,and
                extra lean beef.
These provide good low fat, quality protein sources.

Carbohydrate intake should be taken from low glycemic carb sources, such as:
                yams,
                brown rice,
                oatmeal,
                baked potatoes,
                fibrous vegetables, and fresh salads.

One of his questions was can you get cut with diet alone, my answer was yes, to answer his other and your question, I would assume that the guy weight trains so this along with a calorie restricted diet, good protien sources any maybe some chemical assistance can bring about the same results, but I'm trying to influence the guy to include cardio as its a healthier option in my view i.e. better for him.

I have done HIT, my opinion of it is that it has its place but to be honest its not my preference, I do vary the intensity of my workouts, some days light and some days heavy, different rest periods etc but thats another matter.

My preference is to seperate cardio from weights (albeit that I'm sure weights does give you some cardio anyway), and the reasons are for simplicity of workout and health, I prefer to use my weight training workouts for muscle stimulation and my cardio for health and fat loss and thats what I'm advocating for this guy to do.

what sort of excercise? gentle cardio, walking, HIT What??

From what I've read and believe to be true its the gentle to moderate massaging of the heart thats the best for healthy heart, long hill walks etc, but time is the problem so for me I think that if this guy adds say 2 cardio workouts to his resistance training workouts this will serve to help him burn fat in a healthy way without so much restriction of calories needed (possibly leading to los of muscle mass and lack of brain energy / tiredness) with just diet alone, he cant reduce the fat content of his diet add the cardio and promote healthy heart all in one.

                  What do you reckon? LOL

sorry that wasn't even you, that was someone elses stupid comment.

The thing is on the fat loss/cardio question we are both trying to help the guy and have ultimately provided two options for him even our prefferences are a little different I would definately agree that HIT provides a healthy alternative cardio wise when compared to low rep big rest training, and I would agree that it promotes fat loss more also.

                            The real question is:
Do I not eat the cookie or do I eat the cookie and do a little cardio.
You guys need to read these questions a little deeper.
