  • Hammer Strength Leg Machines

The question I have is on the Iso-Lateral Hammer Strength Leg Press and the Hammer Strength Hack Press. The way these machines operate are they actually working the same muscles in the legs or separate muscles. I have not done the Hack Squat on the Leg Press and was thinking of adding it.

    Thanks

I have used both leg press and hack press in my workouts. I feel the hack press hits my quads better than the leg press, which works both thighs and quads evenly and even hammys to some extent.

Would you use both machines for the during the same leg workout day?

I separate my legs into a quads day and a hams day. On quads day, one of my regular routines is squats, leg presses and then super set leg extensions with hack squats or hack presses. I guarantee your quads will burn!

Of course, follow this up with some calves work.

Hey BBAddict, thanks for the info. If you can clear up one thing for me I was confused about the Ham and Quads split which exercises do you do for each. Thanks for the help really trying to concentrate on legs and tonight is leg day.

Well, I try to mix it up a lot, but I can give you examples for each. Splitting them up has really helped with my leg development, which was and perhaps still is a lagging part. I didn't do a lot of leg work the first year of lifting so my upper body had a jump start. Anyway, some examples of what I do for each are.

Hams: Deadlifts, stiff-legged deadlifts, seated leg curls, lying leg curls, swiss ball single legged leg curls, bridges, lunges

Quads: Squats, front squats, hack squats, hack presses, leg extensions, leg presses, wall squats, lunges, bench step-ups

I mix these up a lot just to keep some variety and to keep my muscles guessing. Have fun hitting those legs hard today!

they work the quads just like any other leg exercise (which is the same as the "Thigh") the difference with Hammer strength is that they have accurate strength curves for a full range of motion. Most other brands of machines have inaccurate cams and counterweights to actually achieve a full contraction at the top and bottom of the movement. If you can use Hammer strength machines I would reccomend them over free weights any day.

Thanks for the info guys, I appreciate the help. I have joined a gym with lots of hammer strenght equipement and I have started to use them, they feel a lot better on these old bones, as oppose to some of the free weights I used in my younger days. Still experimenting with all the different machines.

Sorry for the inaccuracy. I guess what I was trying to say is that leg presses hit more of the upper thigh as compared to the hack press, which seems to hit the medial head harder than the lateral head or the rectus femoris.

I do love hammer strength machines. A gym I was at in Memphis had a whole lower floor of basically the whole line of hammer strength equipment. It was some of the best workouts I've had in a while. Different than the norm but also every exercise felt like I got a great stretch and great contraction. Much better biomechanics than most machines!

yeah the hammer machines do hit that stubborn upper quad area better than anything. I wish my gym had the leg press. the contraction was amazing at the top.
