  • Push-Ups

I have been getting enough rest period between workouts, actually working one body part per week and going every other day.

The question I have is concerning push-ups.

1.) Can you do this exercise everyday, if not how often would guys do them. I did not know if it affected the recover time for chest, shoulders or tri.

2.) If not everyday whats days and with what body part, chest, tri, shoulders etc.

    Thanks

i dont know the correct answer but i personally only do pushups on a chest day and i rarely do them...maybe once a month

i get three chairs, two for my arms, and one to put my feet on, this way i can go down much further without the floor being in the way

I would not do push ups everyday. Your chest grows the most when it's resting. Pumping out push ups everyday will hinder growth cause you're body is never getting a chance to rebuild. You may be able to just pump out a few just to put some blood in the muscles, but don't do a full on push up work out on your rest days.

          ^^^That is a good question.

I know of two guys that do them. One is an athlete, only training for strength and the other is a Marine. It looks like they only do them 1-2 times a week though.

I do them just for a warm up in the morning to get the blood flowing in my chest/shoulders/arms....but it is only like 20 or so. But don't really use them for a real training purpose...unless you are adding weight to your back they are pointless as an exercise.

Thanks for the info. Actually I have always done them specially when I was not able to get into the gym.

The second reason was that is was part of my therapy for my shoulder, when I was doing therapy mon, wed, fri they were having me do 2 sets of 15.

Also as I read and learn about new ways of training and today a light bulb went off in my head saying is this really a good thing. I am a little older and push ups was always something everyone had you do. Also in my martial art class it seems like they do push up every other day also.

I will give them a rest and if I do, do them will be on chest day.

                Thanks again.

We have to do them in martial arts class as well and depending on how long they make us do them, I may do between 70 and 100, which really screws up chest recovery and also how good I feel on the next chest day.

Pushups are great but it depends on whether you are wanting to build big chest muscles or just tone up the ones you have. If you are wanting to build a big chest then I would say not to do them everyday. If you just want to keep your chest toned up then pushups everyday won't hurt. If you look at the Marines that are fresh out of boot camp their chest are pretty tone, but not huge and they do pushups everyday, twice a day!

very true....but what if your goal is not to gain muscle? What if your goal is endurance, conditioning, for a sport like say boxing, where you will want your muscles to be able to function at top speed in the 8th round as they did in the first? If you want your muscles to be conditioned and trained to last for a competition like this is it ok to work push ups more often then you would if your goal were increased muscle size?

If you're not looking for anabolism, then i'd say push ups would be good for building the endurance and speed for something like boxing. Calisthenics are great for goals like these. I doubt they would be detrimental to strength as long as you're getting your heavy lift days in there and subbing in the push ups to build that stamina on your off days.
