  • Traps

I usually lift traps with my back and i usually do shrugs, that's about it....anybody know some more trap exercises that directly affect them, aside from like upright rows and dead lift...I'm lookin' to get huge traps, so it looks like I have two sets of shoulders! any input would be appreciated....

for me it depends since i change my workouts every 4-6 weeks. I usually train them with back but once i switch the workouts i do them with shoulders.

What I do are about 5 sets of shurgs. I alternate between dumbells and barbells. Or at times Im doing bb shurgs and get some light db's for a burn. Just go heavy, but good enough that you can do the exercise properly. You wanna do it with good form.

Use the sticky's in the training section - you'll find way more than you need there.

Well, shrugs are a shoulder exercise so it's probably a better idea to do them with shoulders. That's just my opinion. It's impossible to work your shoulders without using your traps. That's just the way your body's constructed. Upright rows are good, but if you're looking for an alternative, try cleans. Either hanging cleans or all the way from the floor, whichever you prefer. Ever notice how football players have huge traps? They do lots of cleans. It's a great upper body strength builder anyway.

Db shrugs is what i did most of my life and i hate that their so big now. Also seated front shoulder raises really high like straight up and you'll really feel it. If that doesn't work power cleans. You'll look like a ninja turtle. I personally don't believe in doing weight so heavy struggling to get a full shrug, if you can't go all the way too heavy. I never heard any one else believe this but squats (imo) make them grow too. Just having weight on your back-trap area you have to adapt and grow so you can support the heavier weight. it's also a proven fact that muscles you work out on the same day as squats and other testereone releasing (don't know if this will do any good if you're on cycle) that body part will grow immensely.

are you just talking about upper traps? if so shrugs or 1 of the many variations of shrugs will hit it. Middle and Lower traps require deadlifts and/or a wide grip low cable pull.

I only do three sets of db shrugs on shoulder day as I do deads on back day and that hits the traps really hard especially aw I am doing 10-12 reps on deads now.

One type of trap exercise you can do is get on the standing calf raise and do a shrug movement. It wroks that same as shrugs but eliminates your foreamrs if you are having problems with your grip and heavier weights.
