  • Lower back help.

I was just woundering what some of you do for lower back exercises.

At my gym, there is this bench that you lay on with your feet locked and then you bend all the way down and pull your upper body back up using your lower back muscles. It's like a reverse sit-up. I notice this works my lower back greatly especialy when I hold a barbell too.

I just really want to find some other exercises on lower back rather than this one because every bodypart I train during the week, I do a totally different exercise the following week to keep things different and fun.

Are you doing deadlifts? I don't know any better lower back exercise than that. That should be a standard in everybody's back workouts. It's sad because I've only seen about 2 other ppl doing it at my gym.

Deadlifts are by far the best. Good Mornings also work the lower back nicely.

I've done deadlifts before, but I hurt my back real bad at work trying to move a transformer and I've done deadlifts with lighter weight after the injury and towards the end of the workout my back will be sensitive (kinda hurt but not really...). I havent done deadlifts in about 2 months but I guess I could try again.

Sounds like you are starting too heavy. You also have to make sure to move up in weight slowly.

if you havent done deads before, id recommend doing back extensions (the reverse sit-up) for a month or so prior to help prevent injury. also, make sure you research proper form, as deads and back extensions are probably the easiest excersises to injure yourself with.

yes those are called Hyper extensions and are good. you really don't need to much of a range of motion since most of the bottom part is just hip flexor movement and not lower back contraction....also if you do deadlifts then do them off a power rack that is set so the bar at rest is a few inches below the knee. unless you are a competitive powerlifter there is no need to do them off the floor (or if you are like 5' 5" and below in height you should be okay).
