  • My routine (Feel free to critique)

I haven't started this yet...the plan was to start in a week.

    Sunday: Chest, Tri's
    Monday: Back, Bi's
    Tuesday: Shoulders, Forearms
    Wednesday: Legs
    Thursday: Chest, Tri's
    Friday: Back, Bi's
    Saturday: Rest

With 3-4 exercises per muscle group and 4 sets per exercise. I have read that some people don't like to do chest and tri's or back and bi's in the same day. I have also read that putting those together you really get to burn them out. So anyway...input???

The above would be a 6 week phase of heavier weight low reps. The next phase I would change it up (not sure how yet) and going light weight high reps. Thoughts???

The plan is to workout in the morning at 5am. Workout would Probably last about 45min. Cardio (3-5 days a week) and abs would start around 430pm.

This is way too much training, meaning overtraining. Assuming that you are working hard and lifting to build muscle, you should not be training the same muscle twice in a week. That doesn't give it time to recover and rebuild.
I would suggest max of 5 days of lifting/wk. I don't mind chest/tris, back/bis some of the time. I use back/bis together once in a while just to mix things up and its definitely effective. When I was doing a 3-day split, it worked great. However, nothing is perfect forever and I don't think that it is a good way to do your training most of the time.
Also 12-16sets per muscle group is definitely excessive for some. I don't mind that high for some of the larger muscle groups, but 16 sets for bis would be insane.
Just some things to think about if you want to rework your schedule.

I like BBAddicts advice here. However, I would also take YJ's advice and flip the cardio in the afternoon to the early am and do your workout in the pm. For most people, the time of day that you are doing cardio (in the afternoon) is the point where you can function the best during intense workout cycles...

I'm not trying to be an ass here (:D) but either follow the sound advice that you are getting from the board or don't, it's that simple. If your "buddy" is who you want to listen to, then listen to him and just cruise in silent mode on the boards. It seems that you keep posting the same stuff here and there but you're not really hearing what anyone tells you. You're getting some of the best advice around but your posts show that you don't seem to recognize it...

In regards to the cardio in the morning and workout in the afternoon. We tried to workout in the evening but there were too many people so we switched it to in the morning. In about 2-3 months we will start working out in the evening once the gym dies down some.

I didn’t realize I asked the same question??? If so…my bad. I have done lots of reading about a variety of techniques and whatnot. I basically told my buddy that it didn’t seem like a good idea to do that many forced reps (assuming that is what you are talking about). He thought I was full of shit…and that I wasn’t specific enough (on the routine with forced reps) when I had talked to people. So this time I was specific…that’s all.

I do take what you guys say into consideration. There is just a lot of information out there. On top of that…a lot of it is conflicting. So I’m just trying to get as much info as possible and come to my own conclusions. As for my buddy he is on his own when it comes to research. He says he will try anything once. I say try it after you have done research about it to make sure you wont hurt yourself…either now or down the road.

You're fine bro - I wasn't coming down on you - just telling you to be aware that you're where you need to be if you want to excel in this game....

I suppose that may be a good excuse...

Maybe not the exact same thing over and over. It's just that you seem pretty new to the whole training lifestyle but you're not listening to the advice and you start off by asking about "shortcuts." This sport (even if you don't want to compete etc) is a LONG TERM investment....

There's a ton of information out there - use what works best for you but try everything if possible. I have learned that I get better results with higher set workouts while somebody else would be seriously overtraining if they did what I did (although I also implement lower volume training frequently to keep my body guessing). Everyone is different and advice is a dime a dozen in a gym. You just happen to have come to a very knowledgeable board - just keep your eyes and ears open......

YES, I am definitely new to the training lifestyle. I had a personal trainer about 3 years ago...but only went to him for about 3-4 months, then i graduated college and it was time to move on.

I feel i am an open minded person. I just like to do research. I do it on everything from what car to buy, to what hometheater equipment to buy. As well as supplements, training techniques, "shortcuts", etc. I just strongly felt with my buddies experience (or mine) that 36 forced reps in 6 weeks is over training.

By the way...this is a great board!! I will try and get some pics posted so everyone can start to see the results over time. I have been trying to talk my buddy into joining...since he is the one with most of the questions...he just doesnt believe me this is my prove sometimes...lol. He isnt all about the internet...ill keep working on him though...

            thanks
