powerlifters train for strength and bodybuilders for increased mass . that being said if your adding mass your getting stronger as well and vice versa . the decision of which to be [ pl or bb ] can be based solely on what your goals are but they can also be based on realistic expectations , if your genetics for being a bb are all wrong and your build is very blocky with a thick waist and bone structure guess what , you may very well be built to be a powerlifter ;) . powerlifters tend to concentrate more on the core excersices [ squat , deadlift , and flat bench ] and they typically lift in a lower rep range for strength and bodybuilders have a more balanced workout and usually have a slightly higher rep range . i hope this helps bro :)

True powerlifter work in a very low rep range. 1-2 they do 7-8 sets of these thier main goal is to lift more, looking for a bigger one rep max. Powerlifters normally cary alot more bodyfat also.

Bodybuilders are looking to do just what the name says build the perfect body. They normally work in a mid to high rep range. 6-12 and do less sets normally 3. They care more about gaining size than how much they lift. I know some bodybuilders who are huge and never bench over 200lbs not be cause they can't but because they are looking time under stress not the amount of stress. Most bodybuilder hate body fat and will try to keep it as low as they can.

First understand that a muscle's growth in size is not porportional to that muscles growth in actual strength. With that said, Bodybuilders train to get the most size growth from there muscles by whatever means possible, and powerlifters try to get the most strength from their muscle. Their two different arts that use the same medium.
