I don't use a pad for 8 plate squats. 10 plates is probably a different story.

I don't know. They look like 45s to me. Not trying to be a smartass here, but think about that for a second. Doing sets, ass to grass with 850lbs. Maybe doable, but not likely. A bar that would bend like that couldn't handle that much weight. It looks like it's made like that. I could be wrong, that's just what I see.Originally posted by ROCKETW19bro thoes arnt 8 normal plates they are 100lb plates. did you see the way the bar was bending? i squat 8 normal plates all the time and the bar dosnt even flinch.

no matter what they 'look like' to you, those are not 45's, they are 100s.Originally posted by babybluesI don't know. They look like 45s to me. I like squats, used to do them alot, but I think they're over rated and as for deep ass to grass squats, all they ever did with me was build ass, hips and thicken my waist. Ass to grass is fine if your 5ft 7" or have short legs or something, but theres plently of people with fucked backs, knees and hip replacements from damage done by squats.
I think that many people legg press and hack squat like pussies but if they trained hard on them they'd get great leg development.
Squats are good, especially for beginers using a light weight, but don't get caught in all this macho crap about squatting, Dorian had to stop due to injury from it and it didn't slow his leg development did it?
I am a bit prejudice though I must admit

The people who fuck up their knees and backs squatting are doing something wrong. You can fuck up your back doing leg presses and you can fuck up your knees doing hack squats easily. Since you brought up Dorian Yates, he always said that he built the mass in his legs squatting and never would have stopped if he didn't have to.Originally posted by Mr incredibleI like squats, used to do them alot, but I think they're over rated and as for deep ass to grass squats, all they ever did with me was build ass, hips and thicken my waist. Squats are the best lower-body exercise ever.

You had to "look" at the picture just like me. So, as it turns out, you're just stating what you think they "look like" just like I did. They "look like" 45s to me because the middle of the plate is too thin. Like I said, that's just what it "looks like" to me.Originally posted by glowallano matter what they 'look like' to you, those are not 45's, they are 100s.Last edited by babyblues; 06-16-06, 08:40 AM.

Good to hear. You're attitude toward all of this is awesome, I'm impressed that you're so willing to listen to good advice.Originally posted by wordskiwell, as an update,I asked the owner of the gym to show me how to do free squats properly.I did it with just the bar to make sure i had my form down. Now its time to add some weight.

Ian Harrison, junior Mr Universe fucked his knees, Rhino off Gladiators Fucked his hips along with plenty others doing squats, I don't know any that done those kind of injuries doing Hacks or leg press. If you stick to doing 2 plates a side then fine, you won't have any probs but you won't get much muscle growth either.Originally posted by ControlThe people who fuck up their knees and backs squatting are doing something wrong. Leg press you can stress the muscle with more weight without the same knee strain. Hacks yes you have to be careful with the knees but its still safer and for me stresses the sweep more.
Not saying squats don't have there place I just don't think they are the be all and end all, for all, and I think you can get great power, size and development with other variations.
Dorian was one of the biggest proponents of basic heavy movements with only one or two working sets per excercise, he also tore just about every fucking muscle which is why he had to quit!, coincidence? I don't think so
Squats are definately a great base excercise but one balance I prefer other combinations and get better results.

My younger brother just started coming to the gym with me and I had almost forgot how odd the feeling of a squat is when you first try to do it. He'll get it eventually though. Youre on the right track asking for help, just make sure as you add the weight you dont go too much too fast and sacrifice form.

I think that it depends from person to person. Now, take Frederick Hatfield, Dr. Squat. That guy squatted 1014lbs at the age of 45 @ 255lbs and his knees are fine at the age of 64 (or so he claims). I think it comes down to too much of a good thing. Even though squats are the most effective, if you're not giving your connective tissues and joints enough rest or if you're building mass more quickly than those connective tissues and joints can adapt, you're going to cause irreparable damage.Originally posted by Mr incredibleIan Harrison, junior Mr Universe fucked his knees, Rhino off Gladiators Fucked his hips along with plenty others doing squats, I don't know any that done those kind of injuries doing Hacks or leg press. I don't know, I can see both sides. I just wonder if the human body was really meant to squat that much weight on a consistent basis. Some people can, but many can't. I'll just add that if you're claiming that Yates had to quit because of the cummulative effect of all those muscle tears, than it wasn't the exercises themselves that are to blame It was him pushing himself too far. And that can happen with any exercise for any body part. Any exercise can become dangerous if you disregard your body's limits.Last edited by babyblues; 06-16-06, 01:13 PM.

Actually I know that those are 100s because that picture is quite a famous one. The guy squatting is Dave Draper and I know for a fact that those are 100s. So I am not just looking like you are... Good luck though!

I thought that was Tom Platz... I never would have thought Draper to squat 845.Originally posted by glowallaActually I know that those are 100s because that picture is quite a famous one.
