If you stick to doing 2 plates a side then fine, you won't have any probs but you won't get much muscle growth either.
Leg press you can stress the muscle with more weight without the same knee strain. Hacks yes you have to be careful with the knees but its still safer and for me stresses the sweep more.
Not saying squats don't have there place I just don't think they are the be all and end all, for all, and I think you can get great power, size and development with other variations.
Dorian was one of the biggest proponents of basic heavy movements with only one or two working sets per excercise, he also tore just about every fucking muscle which is why he had to quit!, coincidence? I don't think so
Squats are definately a great base excercise but one balance I prefer other combinations and get better results.
If you don't want to squat, then don't. Nobody's going to force you. If you think that you can't get injured doing leg presses or hacks, that's not true. I know of a guy that cracked a rib doing leg presses. I used to lower the weight too far down and let my hips raise up off the pad, couldn't figure out why my lower back started hurting. Finally an older guy told me what I was doing wrong and had me adjust the seat a little and not let my hips roll back. Leg presses and hacks are both essentially un-natural movements.

Got this quote from an article that talks about deep squats on EXRX.net and its proved true in my experience:Originally posted by metalmartyI always always always do heavy squats and then heavy leg presses in the same workout. But I've noticed that my knees really kill me when I go ass to grass. It's different for everyone. I take my legs to parallel, and that hasn't hindered my development.
"The primary danger to the knee occurs when the tissues of the calf and thigh press together altering the center of rotation back to the contact area creating a dislocation effect."
I've noticed the only times my knees hurt is when the calf/ham touch.

I rarely do squats anymore. They bother my knees. I do hack sled and leg press.
