Would like to add dips to my tricep day. Are dips hard on the shoulders if you have a bad shoulder. Trying to add a few more exercises. How deep should you go.

Do you have a bad shoulder? imo I don't think dips puts any more stress than other stuff you do. ie:shoulder press or bench press.
If you gonna do it and if you wanna isolate your triceps I wouldn't go more than 3/4 deep. If you go too deep you start getting your chest in to the picture also.

YES - they can be VERY harmful to the shoulder - don't go beyond 70degrees ROM and the second you have ANY pain (even a day or two later) x them off your list of acceptable exercises...
To build on what wnabeabeast said though - elbows in and upright posture for triceps (keep your chin up) and elbows flared out a little with foward leaning posture for chest (chin to clavicle) - but BE CAREFUL - these will put way more stress on your shoulder than other exercises....
I just started doing these again. and I found that the dip bars I am using are a little more space out than normal ones I used to use and it makes the exercise much better than when my elbows are closer in. not sure why but I am loving the feeling, I think it takes a lot of the chest out of it since my arms are wider.
Thanks for the info guys. I have started doing the dips, but I am using one of those machines Power Strength Weight Assisted Chin-Dip Machine. I figured this way I will ease up to using my full body weight. At about 50 percent right now and no pain so far.

Good stuff bro - just be careful with that machine as it tends to limit your posture to only one position and since you're more upright your shoulders have less ROM than you think...
