I originally had a bad pull doing deads lifts around age 20 I think. heard or felt a pop in my right side of my back. after that certain positions would hurt or send sharp pains. I thought that I should stop deadlifting all together. but then through some advice from a trusted trainer a few years ago I started pulling from 4-5 inches off the floor and starting real slow I built my strength back up. I didn't even really notice that the pain went away until it hit me one day that I could bend over and put my socks on and not be careful, I could stretch in all positions and it wouldn't tweak. I did stop deadlifting regularly at some point in the last few years and within a few months I felt some pain come back. so now I make sure I always keep it in my routine and since I have I have never had pain.Originally posted by NekrawulfWhat was the cause of the pain? well if the medical reason was CAUSED by the full ROM then its not a trick. and its also funny how people just assume I don't do something to strengthen that part of the ROM that doesn't involve deadlifts. obviously you want to be strong in all parts and incorporate a well balanced program however I will never believe that unless you are competing and NEED the SAID principle that deadlifts should be done from the ground.Originally posted by NekrawulfWell it seems you have a medical reason, I just didnt want a new guy readin this and thinking he should be doing partial ROM deads.

It sounds to me that the medical reason was caused by improper form, not by the full ROM itself. The deadlift is the single most functional exercise you can do, it is executed everyday by people picking something off the ground. To say that somone (yourself excluded) should not execute it at full ROM simply because they are not competing is bad advice. As I stated earlier I have seen big guys throw their backs out doing something stupid simple... such as unplugging a power cord from an electrical outlet. And More often than not it is due to muscular imbalances from non balanced training at partial reps.Last edited by Nekrawulf; 12-14-07, 11:59 PM.
